GC Training #3: Barnhardt Trail to plateau

  • Mar 17, 2013 · 9:00 AM

Hi all.

Happy St. Patty's and GC training hike #3 will be held this Sunday 3/17.  Destination is Barnhardt Trail in the Mazatzals, near the town of Rye.  This trail runs through a couple scenic canyons alongside running streams and view-studded vistas.  It's an intermediate trail, about 6 miles RT and just under 2000 ft elevation gain.  There's enough steep switchbacks to get your heart racing, but your toil is worth it. We'll pass a gorgeous waterfall en route to the high plateau.

Be forewarned.  Even though there are no sheer cliffs, some folks who are extremely uncomfortable with heights might find a few ledges on this hike uncomfortable.  There are no technical parts to this hike though.  Expect to be back at the meeting place mid afternoon, plenty of time to get your green beer!

Time and Place:
Sunday 3/17: 9 am
Target Parking lot, Shea Blvd, about 1/2 mile west of SR 87 Beeline Hwy
Barnhardt Trailhead approx 10 am

Bring:
High clearance vehicle if you have one -- 5 mi dirt rutted dirt road to trailhead
2.5 L water per person
Picnic lunch and trail snacks
sunblock, hat
Light windbreaker -- Higher altitude could mean cool breezes
Something green to wear or you'll get pinched

Dogs are OK on this trail if they are leashed and can handle 6 miles of rough terrain.

Hope to see you there.

    Hi Kim;
    Charles did respond to you earlier today and said he didn't know what happened and said and encouraged you to come. Also, I'll be driving and you are welcomed to ride with me. We hiked together last week at Black Mesa, if you don't recall who I am.

    For those who commented on the condition of the dirt road, thank you. I have seen that road be somewhat rutted and may be more difficult for passenger cars. I am encouraging people who have high clearance vehicles to bring them. If not, no worries we should be able to manage.

    I can't make this one -but if you're starting at Barnhardt TH I have driven my VW Beetle in this road multiple times, rain & shine, & it's been fine. No high clearance needed (unless recent rains washed out the road..) It's just more comfortable in a higher vehicle.

    Hi Charles and everyone;
    I don't have my Santa Fe because it's in the shop, but I have a rental Chevy that I can drive to the traihead if the road isn't to bad.

    If I wear green can I still get a pinch?

    March 14, 2013

    • Charles

      Free pinches for everyone

      March 14, 2013

  • Melissa B.

    Also, how far of a drive is it and can my yaris make it? Or do we need a jeep?

    March 14, 2013

    • Charles

      Near Rye, 12 miles from Payson. 5 Miles on dirt. Given rains I'd bring the Jeep.
