Hike Pumpkin Trail to Kendrick Peak

Hello Everyone,

This trip was originally posted as a weekend trip, but we've decided to post only the day hike portion as an organized trip.  Anyone that still wants to head up and camp for the weekend, post a comment with your plans & your phone number if you want others to meet you either here in the valley or up north.

On Sunday, 6/2, Meagan will head up to Flagstaff from Phoenix to hike Kendrick Peak via the Pumpkin Trail.  This will be a difficult day hike, gaining 2,900 feet over 5 miles (one way).  The elevation tops out at just over 10,400 feet.  The return trip will be via the same route.  Mountain forecast site reports dry conditions for Humphrey's and surrounding peaks, but we'll need to call when the office is open to confirm.  If chance of rain is => 30%, the hike will be cancelled.

Time: Average round trip time for a fit hiker is about 5 hours. With a long stay at the top, probably closer to 6.

Gear: Plan on layers as it will be cold & windy at the top, a wind/rain layer is nice to have on this hike.  Wear footwear appropriate for varied mountain trail conditions (wet/dry/rocky).

Water:   You will likely have a higher water requirement than usual being that this is an elevation hike without acclimation; please plan accordingly.

Food: Snacks & lunch.

For more information about the trail and the hike, checkout this link: http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=195

Everyone will meet in the Red Robin parking lot just east of the I-17 off of Happy Valley Rd at 7:00 AM to arrange carpooling and then on the road by 7:15.  A stop in Flagstaff on the way back for dinner is a definite possibility.  I'll send out an email with confirmation on weather conditions & Meagan's phone number at the end of the week.

Are we coming back to phoenix the same day? Are there any steep roads to hike? What pace of hike would this be?

I haven't done this particular trail but the Kendrick trail is 5 miles of continuous uphill, not particularly steep but not a lot of flat parts for breaks. I am not a fast hiker, so there is no need to feel rushed. As this is an out and back hike, we can rejoin anyone who does not make it all the way to the top on the way back down.

Hey Meagan, I noticed hikearizona.com gives driving directions from Williams. I've hiked the regular Kendrick Peak trail several times, always driving there thru Flagstaff and taking FR245 off of hwy 180. I know that trailhead is different than the Pumpkin Trail trailhead, but I originally "assumed" you would get there by going the same way, just continuing further on a forest road or two. Is the Williams way faster? Do you know which way we'll be carpooling? (what can I say, I'm a planner ;) Thanks!

There is a link to google maps on the hike description. I had originally thought the same thing, but when I looked it up yesterday it had us going a different way. Rt66 comes to mind, but I'm not at the office today do I can't be too specific. I'll bring a couple printed copies to the meetup point.

Here's the driving info from Flag: From Flagstaff, take Hwy 180 North to FR 193, about 10 miles north of the turnoff to the Arizona Snow Bowl; turn left on FR 193 and continue to FR 171. Turn right on FR 171 and go 2 miles to FR 190; turn right on FR 190 and go 1 mile to main parking area. For Pumpkin start, go 2 or 3 mpore miles on 190.-- Kurt, you are correct FR245 meets up w/FR 171.

Google maps puts the drive time from the Red Robin at 2 hours 49 minutes. I will be leaving at 7:15 from there, so if you are meeting at the Pumpkin trail head, please be there by 10:00. There are directions in the link to the hike description.

Hi Everyone! Just a heads up... there is a 100 mile mountain bike race on Saturday and the route to access the track where they are conducting the race will pass right by the area where we will be camping. Traffic will probably be a bit bothersome so, we are thinking about moving the location for camping. We're talking over whether or not to move. Will keep you posted!

I've made the mistake of camping near the Barn Burner race last year and it's very loud and very dusty. It is also hard to get to Kendrick TH as they are racing on the same rd. Perhaps camp on the other side of road, Hart Prarie Rd. I may be up there this w/end as well.

Yes, very good point Vickie. I was hoping it might be thin by then and it will definitely be chilly up there, but I'll check conditions before we leave & send out an update.
