We had 11 people show up! It was a GREAT group and tons of fun - even though we were all soaking wet by the time we got off at Phon D Sutton! I'll see you guys on the next full moon kayak - and for those of you who could not make it...try to come next time! The more the merrier! :-)

How do we and/or our kayaks get back to our cars at the starting point where we parked? Also, how about a phone contact for questions or if we get lost getting there

getting back to a basic question- where does one find 'glow sticks', pray tell?

and basic question two: what is the estimated duration of the float/paddle? Another thought is that several of us ought to bring flashlights for loading up.

    July 16, 2013

    • Scott

Walmart, sport chalet sell glow sticks. Float takes about 3:30.

      July 16, 2013

    • Angie

you can get glow sticks at the 99 cent store, walmart, lots of places. If you get off at Phon D Sutton the trip will take 2 1/2 hours. If you decide to get off on Granite Reef then 3 1/2 hours. We normally have half get off at Phon D Sutton and the other half gets off at Granite Reef. You also need a blue pass. There 6 bucks at the gas station. Scott will go to Granite Reef and I think Lynne and I might as well. But I will have to ask her. You don't need flashlights for loading. The moon is bright. The full moon is on Monday so this Saturday the moon should be almost full.

I do not have a kayak and willing to rent one from captain Ted , my only problem is returning it , I live in Glendale and would have to stay all night to 6:30 am Sunday to return it. I was wondering how many other people will be renting from him and if you would be willing to return my kayak to captain Ted on Sunday? Does anyone know of any kayak rentals on the west side of town ?

The night is drawing near!! Don't forget to get out EARLY and buy your glow sticks for the kayaks and maybe even a couple for around your neck (that's what I do). Just helps us keep track of everyone...and if you have a headlamp...bring that too!

I talked to Captain Ted at : Salt River Canoe, Kayak & Raft Rentals, Mesa. Captain Ted (480)[masked] he said he has worked with TAH many times before and you would pick up your kayak between 3-6pm Saturday and return it by 6pm Sunday for $37.20 tax included. He said if anyone had any other questions please call him.

    Question: how wide is the Salt for navigating? Wondering if my 14.5' kayak may be unsuitable if the river is fairly winding or narrow. Worked great on the lakes and meandering rivers in Upper Midwest. Guess I could rope together some tubes and have a tube-kayak!!! :>}

Hi Bill - no the river is pretty wide. Angie has a kayak very similar to yours in size and she manages just fine. It is not a "winding" water run...more like meandering! Hahaa

on a scale of 1-10, how experienced should you be with kayaking?

    July 14, 2013

Hi Vanessa - as long as you can swim and are coordinated - you will be fine. Angie and I have taken many people down the river who have never been kayaking. The lower Salt is very calm - its not wild water rapids! Haha Not to mention - we always ride close to any newbies and give plenty of instruction!

I would love to go but have no kayak. Haven't kayaked in ages so If someone with experience has a two seat kayak that I could go along with that would be fantastic. Or if you have a single I'd rent a double to accommodate.

Brian posted a list of rental places in this thread. Not sure which one would be closest to you.

  • Nancy L.

I'm not familiar with the bridge parking lot. Could you post a more specific location description, please? Thanks!

    July 9, 2013

    • Angie

Have you every been to the tubing rental place, Salt River Tubing? If you take Power Rd. it takes you to the 4-way stop thats where the tubing place is. Pass the 4-way stop and it's about 2 miles further and we park on the north side which will be to the left. If you take Ellsworth, Ellsworth turns into U. Pass when you get to 4-way that way you turn right and you will hit the bridge about 2 miles up.

      July 10, 2013

    • Nancy L.

Thanks Angie. I was out that way yesterday and found the parking lot. See you Saturday!
