Description: The Kachina trail winds through beautiful pine and aspen forest along the Southwestern flank of Mt. Humphreys. The trail offers views overlooking Flagstaff and surrounding areas. This time of year with the wet monsoon weather the tall grasses, ferns, flowers and a variety of mushrooms flourish.

Hike[masked] miles (~2.5 -3 hours) out along the Kachina Trail then return via the same route making a 7-9 mile round trip, roughly 5 hours total hiking time at a leisurely pace.

For those that need more, they can trek a head of the group and reach the intersection of the Weatherford Trail and 6.1 miles and return making it a 12.2 mile trek.  Likewise those wishing a shorter trip can rest/snack earlier and we will catch them on the return or back at the trail head.

What to bring: Water (2-3 liters), snacks/small lunch, rain jacket, sunscreen.
Optional: hat, camera, trekking poles, sense of humor

I'm gonna have to skip this. Looks like thunderstorms which would not be fun. I don't have the right weather gear. I was really looking forward to this! Darn. Next time!

I hate to bail, but I do not like to drive such a long way and hike in thunderstorms. I really want to do this trail, so hopefully another will be scheduled.

40% chance of rain tomorrow...best to bring rain gear...

Yes. It is very likely that some where near the hike will have thunderstorms. We may even see thunderstorms off in the distance. Or they may be right on use. Usually I am fortunate when it comes to weather. If there is a serious down pour, plan B would be to do the lava river tube instead.

But yes everyone should have at least a rain jacket for rain gear.

Hi, I am new to this group. Do we carpool and pay the driver for gas? And what time do we expect to return, roughly? Thanks!!!

This sounds great, but turns out I will have to catch you next time - family obligations. Please give my spot to another!

If you update your RSVP, it will automatically give your spot to someone on the wait list.

Is it ok to bring my dog?

    1 · September 6, 2013

    • NateB

It is a dog friendly trail.
However it is your responsibility to keep them under control and legal.

Not sure how the carpooling works, but I am willing to drive. I have a minivan that seats 7 including myself, 6 pretty comfortably. I have a DVD player in the van too. All I ask is for gas to be paid for. I'm excited for this hike!

Usually it is best to organize the carpools at the carpool location. That way those that actually make it can put together a plan quickly. It is paved roads all the way to the trail head so 4wd or high clearance vehicles are NOT needed.

      Ok. Sounds good!
