South Mountain Ridge to Happy Valley (+Happy Hour?)

This is a 6.5 mile loop with 1600' accumulated gain (just what you need on hump day to get you through the rest of the week) to Hidden Valley, returning via Mormon Loop and Ridgeline. Expect this to take us about 2 1/2h - 3h, so bring a light and 2-3 liters of water. There are some fine views and great exercise. While we won't leave anybody behind, this will be walking at a steady pace. We will be on some smaller trails with a bunch of ups and downs (hence the 1600' gain) and scrambling over rocks. This is a strenuous hike, not suitable for beginners.

To get to the trail head take Guadalupe all the West to its end, turn left onto S Pointe Parkway, immediately right onto 48th, immediately left onto Pima Canyon Road and follow to the end. From the North take I-10 Baseline exit via AZ Grand Pkwy to Pointe Pkwy; from the South I-10 Elliot exit via 48th St; or click on the link above.

Afterwards we can head around left on S Pointe Parkway and take the first little left turn lane (past Guadalupe Rd) to Rustler's Rooste (8383 S 48th Street) for a cold beverage of your choice - you've earned it!

Beautiful sunset and city view - loved the big boulders and climbing on them. Also appreciated that climbing partners knowledge of rattlesnakes!

How does this compare to the Pyramid in Ahwatukee in terms of elevation gain and difficulty? I regularly hike the Pyramid to to the National trail and back, about 6 miles, takes me 2 1/2 hours. Don't want to hold anyone back if this one is harder.

If you do Pyramid regularly, you'll be fine. Just come and join us. ;)

Oops! Made the mistake of signing up before reading about the hike... I am not good with hiking steep in the dark... Will withdraw. Another time....

I expect to be past the area where we're stepping over a few rocks before end of twilight. You're welcome to join us tonight or next time. :)

It is less hard than the Pyramid hike, but it is about twice as long. 6.5 miles vs 3 miles. It is about the same elevation, but much more gradual than the Pyramid hike. John and I did it this morning and we are doing it again this evening, so it can't be that hard! ;-)

This is my neck of the woods, hoping to make this a fairly regular one. Feel free to contact me with any suggestions, comments... Best of course in person and over a beer. ;)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
