First Water/Black Mesa Loop

The weather should be fair to start venturing into the Supes.  I'm going to do a 10 mile loop from First Water to Black Mesa on Sunday.  We will meet at the Walgreens off of SR 88 and Apache Trail at 7 am to carpool to the trailhead--high clearance should not be necessary if you wish to meet at the trailhead for a 7:30 am start.  Anyone going to Walgreens should be on time so we can make the trailhead on time to start.

The hike should be no more than 3-4 hours total and will maintain a steady pace.  I plan to take the loop counter-clockwise.  Everyone should carry ample water (there is none on trail) and wear appropriate clothing--pants are recommended for catclaw and snake potential.  Snacks are always good too.

Driving Directions to the trailhead (the carpool meet up location is on the way to the trailhead):

From Mesa follow Highway 60 East to Idaho Road. Turn North onto Idaho Road which is SR88 and follow North 2.2 miles. SR88 bends right just past Scenic St. and Idaho continues North. Be sure to go right and stay on SR88. Follow SR88 5.2 miles to the signed turnoff for First Water Trailhead, this is FR-78. Turn right on to FR-78 and follow 2.6 miles to the end.

What a group of efficient hikers! 3.5 hours at 9.2 miles with a decent break at the valley. Was a nice day out for a stroll in the Supes.

I love this hike. I am going to say yes now, but if my back is not better tomorrow, I will get off the list.
