Sailing and camping on the beach in el golfo Mexico

  • November 8, 2013 · 7:00 PM

Hi, everybody.

Some friends and I are taking our catamarans down to Mexico to do some sailing and camping on the beach.  We are looking for some people to join us and help us set up and sail the boats.

For those of you who have not been there before, el golfo is a tiny fishing village about two hours from Yuma.  it is a very good place.  I have been taking my catamaran down there for many years.  it looks like we will have 2 or 3 catamarans and maybe a couple of sea kayaks this trip.

This is primitive camping on the beach with no facilities.  However, we will have our vehicles, so we will live pretty well.  This is generally a pretty cheap trip.  We camp for free and buy firewood and shrimp from the locals.  You split gas and insurance with your driver.

This trip involves driving about 10 miles down the beach to our campsite, so it is restricted to 4wd and awd vehicles only.  The trip will be limited by the number of suitable vehicles available and also by my personal limit of 13 people.  We bring everything we need with us.

We will drive down Friday night and camp at Organ Pipe National monument.  Saturday morning we cross the border and should be on the beach by about 9 or 10.  We will return on Monday afternoon.  this means you need to be able to play hooky on Monday if you want to join us.

Now, just a few items to clear up regarding the trip:

First of all, we will be in Mexico(as in not the USA).  This means no drugs(that includes pot), no guns, and no bullets.  If you are a hunter or a stoner you need to sanitize your vehicle and luggage before the trip.  Your vehicle will be searched(professionally and politely) by Mexican soldiers.  I have seen them with drug dogs trained by and provided by our government.  If you are busted you will be left behind.  If I catch you with any contraband on the trip you will be told to leave.  If you are a passenger you will be left at the side of the road.  No exceptions.

Secondly, Mexico is a foreign country.  this means you need a passport to return.  The Mexicans will let you in , but the US bureaucrats will not let you return without a valid passport.  You must have one to join us.

This trip requires a bit of planning to pull off right(carpools, boats, etc).  I have had issues with people bailing out on this trip at the last minute.  This creates considerable headache and additional expense for the ones who are left.  It also denies people on the waiting list a chance to go.  Because of this, I ask that you only sign up if you intend to join us.

When you sign up, please answer the questions so I know how many drivers I have.

if anyone has any questions, feel free to give me a call:[masked]

this will be a blast!

Bummer, that's a butt probing weekend for Charles. Bring back some shrimp for the poor guy. I'll have monitoring duties.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
