Full Moon Kayak and Late Night BBQ

lets do a full moon kayak down the Salt River Friday June 13th. and plan on a BBQ afterwards. I will supply the hotdogs, please bring some kind of dish to share/or your own BBQ item of choice if you don't want hotdogs.

A Tonto pass is required. You can get them at the Shell station. We will meet at the shell station to set up shuttle vehicles. We will put in at Water users and take out at Granite Reef, plan on a few hours of kayaking. We will do the BBQ/potluck at Granite Reef.

Please know your limits on kayaking a river. Kayaking a river at night is awesome but be comfortable on a river, it's harder to see at night. You are kayaking at your own risk, I am not liable,......so please bring life vest, you chose if you want to to wear it. A head lamp is a good idea. If you choose to bring alcohol please be responsible (I like beer)  :}  Do remember you will be driving afterwards at some point!! Bottles are not allowed on the river, so please bring cans......

for those who need to rent a kayak there are several places, I know several people have used the Salt River Kayak rental....Captain Ted.

What time do the various recreation areas close? Any issues with parking or vehicle access?

Open late, I think all night. We have never had any issues before.

Marianne, where will you be renting one from? I'm going to check on rentals today, and would love to take you up on your offer of going together, but I will need to rent two - hubby and teen daughter are possibly coming as well!

      June 12, 2014

    • Marianne

Just got online today. Sorry I missed this, but I wouldn't have had room for more than one extra kayak. Unfortunately, I'm in Tucson right now and won't be able to make it back in time for launch. You guys are going to have a great time! I'm sorry I'm going to miss it.

      June 13, 2014

  • CLYDE

As of 3:00, the river flow is over 1100 cfs. Should not change much before we start down. Will make for some nice turbulence in the rapids!

    June 13, 2014

    • Dave

That will make it fun. It is up over 30% from last weekend. At least that type of flow should cover most of the rocks unless you decide to go down the Pinball lane between Water Users and the bridge.

      June 13, 2014

  • Debbie W.

    I picked up forks.

    June 13, 2014

Mike, if you haven't already paid for a rental you can rent one from me and I will bring it to the launchpad and rent it to you for $35 . It is a sit up on top of kayak.

If anyone has cold items that they don't want to leave in a cooler during the kayak trip, I live only 3 miles from Granite Reef in Red Mountain Ranch and would be happy to keep them in my refrigerator and make a quick trip to retrieve them at the end of the journey. Text me at[masked] if you want to make arrangements.

Is there going to be a place you can rent a kayak from that is already on the water? My car doesn't have a roof rack or any way to transport it

    June 12, 2014

    • Gary & T.

A couple of pieces of foam will work - if you want to get fancy - Walmart sells a roof top kit in the Automotive Dept that is basically two pieces of foam and straps.

I'm really not wanting to take the chance.. I've got a brand new car that I really don't want to scratch up. . Is there anyone that has an extra space to help me take a kayak to the launch?

      June 12, 2014

  • Dawna Y.

Yes Steve, they're still called headlamps even if worn on the knees. This way I can find everything that you have left behind when you flip out of your kayak in the dark Mr. yard sale! LOL.

Any suggestions on what food to bring? Bratwurst? Italian sausage and buns?

    1 · June 11, 2014

    • Steve L.

All sounds good, I'm partial to Italian

      June 11, 2014

  • Dawna Y.

My headlamp suggestion is wearing a baseball cap and put the headlamp overtop it completely sheilds the bugs from going into your eyeballs. I have done the moonlight kayak trip eight times now seven of which were during monsoon storms suffice to say there was no full moon and it was pitch black. I also put headlamps on my knees and they worked great!

    June 10, 2014

    • Steve L.

Can you really call it a headlamp when its on your knee's? Just saying

      June 11, 2014

  • Karen

I suggest bringing a headlamp......but they do attract the bugs, you won't need it on all the time luckily!! Some form of clear glasses/goggles etc will help keep the bugs out of your eyes.......I like a bandana to tie around my mouth in and when we are in areas the bugs are thicker.....some times they are worse in certain areas than others and sometimes they are no problem at all. Also a glow stick or two are nice to tie to your kayak and yourself to help others see you!!

    June 10, 2014

    • Marianne

Load up on a multi B vitamin with B1 and B2 to keep the mosquitos at bay. They won't like the way you smell.

I can't cook worth a damn, but I can pick up some pre-made sides or the like at Walmart prior and bring them. Any suggestions? I'll be going solo so I don't plan on drinking but I'll also grab some beer.

Linda. The stove will be perfect. We've used those before- worked great.
Debbie - we will meet at the Shell station and condense down to as few cars/trucks as possible, we'll drop a car at the bottom and the rest to the put in point.
Bill. there are a couple picnic tables there already but thanks
    Toni - yum

Question: How wide is the river. Moved to Phx from W. Michigan and have a 14.5' kayak that worked perfectly in those wide, meandering Midwest rivers. Will it fit here?
Additionally I have a portable camp table (small).

    June 9, 2014

    • Gary & T.

I've taken my 14' sit on top kayak down a few times - no problem

I will bring the grill, but it is small. One of those little table top propane grills. Can also bring a jar of sauerkraut along with a cilantro pesto pasta salad.

    June 9, 2014

  • Toni

    I can make Nutella brownies.

    June 9, 2014

I can bring plates and napkins. My friend and I would like to bring one vehicle. Can we get bum a ride in a shuttle back to the put in point?

    June 9, 2014

  • Steve L.

I love it when a plan comes together. Linda S. can you bring your stove? We will just use yours then. Need some plates and sporks, fixing for the dogs, sides, and desserts. You may wand to bring a beverage or two. We will load the food into the shuttle car and the first people done can start setting up. We'll get the cars from water user back and pop open a cool one. I'm bringing 2 dozen smoked sausages for grilling, need buns

    June 9, 2014

  • Dawna Y.

Is there anyone that has an extra kayak that would be willing to loan out? I have two, but another friend would like to go and needs one! Please call me at[masked] if Yes!

Will probably bring a salad--maybe pasta. We also have a propane table top grill if another is needed. lmk

    June 1, 2014

These are always a lot of fun but as a twist we added a late night BBQ to the mix. I'm bringing 2 dozen smoked sausage dogs and a table top grill. Hoping everyone fills in the rest (did I mention I like beer?)
