Let's Get High -- Humphreys Camp and Hike

Hi all,

Weekend of 6/21,  I'm leading a camp-n-hike to the highest point in AZ -- Humphreys Peak near Flagstaff.  The hike starts at 9,300 ft elevation and gains another 3,300 ft in 4.5 miles.  Yup, you'd have to go to Colorado to get any higher.

We'll be hiking through dense pine forests, but eventually topping out above treeline with panoramic views of surrounding plateaus.  This is a difficult and challenging hike, 9 miles roundtrip.  Your toils will be rewarded with the thought of bagging the highest summit in the state.

I plan to arrive in Flag on Saturday and camp for the night.   You may opt out of the camping part and just drive for the hike if you wish.  Although, camping at 8,000 ft will help alleviate elevation sickness during the hike.  We'll be camping in the open forest on FR151, 3 miles past the Snowbowl turnoff on US180. You'll need to bring all camping gear, toiletries, and water.  There are no facilities.

I have also set a meeting time in North Phoenix on Sunday morning at 6:30 am so those who wish to drive up for the day can gather and carpool.  I am looking for a volunteer to meet at Dennys and herd the day-hiking cats.

Time and Place:
Saturday 6/21: 4 pm, Beaver Street Brewery for HH drinks and dinner.
Saturday 6/21: 7 pm, depart to find a camping spot
Sunday 6/22:  6:30 am, Dennys, just west of I-17 on Bell
Sunday 6/22:  9:00 am, Humphreys Trailhead -- snowbowl ski resort

Directions to Trailhead:
I-17 North to Flagstaff, turns into Milton in town
Left on Humphreys St, after underpass
Left on Fort Valley, follow signs for Grand Canyon / US180
After 7 miles, turn right to Snowbowl
Drive up the mountain, take the first left after entering the Ski Resort

Bring:
     3L water per person
     picnic lunch, trail snacks
     Sunblock, bandana
     Windbreaker

We'll be hiking in high altitude.  To ward off AMS (altitude sickness), take two aspirins/Tylenol the night before the hike and the morning of.  Bring extra for the hike.  Make sure you are well hydrated before and during the hike.

Dogs are welcome, but make sure they can handle the distance and altitude.

Hope you can join me on this adventure.

Charles

Charles, the views were incredible. I lost my hiking buddy to the rest of the pack though...dang...I was slow at top coming down because my fear of heights kicked in. This is one of my favorite hikes in the state.

Glad you made it down, and conquering your fears. Yes, it is an awesome hike.

FYI. Since there won't be much to do at camp tonight, I'm bringing a scary movie for your viewing pleasure in middle of the woods. Hope you don't get nightmares. Bwahaha. Make sure you bring a camp chair.

Ok we might have to find a clearing for that. Most campsites I've been to on FR151 is in the woods.

FYI: I did manage to see the comet after the movie, both with a monocular and scope. The haze had cleared and it was low above the pine tops. Most were turning in and I had to be quiet.

I plan on heading to Flagstaff on Sunday and was just wondering what the carpool situation looks like right now? Gina, since Christina canceled, do you still have plans to be at Denny's?

    June 18, 2014

    • Aaron A.

Dietmar -- you still thinking of carpooling? [Gina -- if it matter one way or the other, I'm keen to get back to town asap also (got a long evening of work to do)]

      June 21, 2014

    • Dietmar

Hi Aaron, I only have a rough idea where you live so let's meet at Denny's as planned (6:30am sharp). It appears there are quite a few people with cars up in Flagstaff - We might be able to re-arrange carpool options for those people who want to catch an early or late ride back to Phoenix.

      June 21, 2014

  • Charles

Ok we're only 0.6 miles in on the dirt road.

    June 21, 2014

  • Gina

How long will the hike take round trip?

    June 21, 2014

    • Gina

Thanks Charles, I hope to be fast and thought 5 hours for the hike, but another group took 7 hours last weekend. Trying to fit in the family dinner after back in Phoenix.

      June 21, 2014

    • Charles

You only have to wait for the slowest person in your carpool. =) Dietmar is pretty fast.

You're a champ! I plan to leave the Beaver after dinner in time to set up in some light as well.

      June 18, 2014

    • Charles

Hi Fan, if you have signal out there, please post directions to the campsite you selected. Post the mileage from the road where your spot is. What your vehicle looks like. There also may be a 4 digit number on a post at each pull-off. If so, please include that info. Thanks.

Hi all, We should be able to set up camp before it gets too dark. Please keep in mind this is at-large camping in the forest, no facilities, no tables, not thing but woods and dirt. Please bring all your water, a camp chair, and something to eat in the morning. There is a Stage II fire restriction in place, so no open flame fires at camp. Propane stoves, lanterns, heaters with an off switch are allowed.

We'll be camping on FR151, exactly 3 miles past the Snowbowl turnoff on US180. Drive up the dirt road 2 miles, and we'll pick any of several numbered turnoffs on the side of the road to set up camp.

Cell phone reception will be sparse. I'm not sure we can contact each other out there. I will try to park my vehicle visible and facing the road as a land mark. If you get there first and find a suitable spot, please do the same.

Hi all, I'm moving the Saturday meeting time in Flagstaff back by one hour to 5:00-ish (tentatively) at Beaver Street. I am going to Blues and Brews festival earlier in the day. If anyone wishes to attend this festival, you can get details at http://www.flagstaffblues.com (you may be able to get discount tickets on Groupon). You can always call/text me at the above listed number in case the "-ish" part kicks in.

    June 16, 2014

    • Charles

That's a possibility. If you need help setting up in the dark, I'll volunteer. ;) Or if you want to pick a spot before sundown, that's an option too. I am not sure we'll have cell coverage on FR151, so we'll have to play it by ear. Worse case we meet at trailhead on Sunday.
