Time for a hike in Sedona. Hopefully we'll catch some Fall colors. We will hike just about 3.75 miles to the top of Wilson Mountain from its north side, with a positive elevation gain of 2200 feet, so there will be some strenuous cardio effort involved! We'll summit and then turn around and go back, for a total of about 7.5 miles. The north side hike will give us views of Oak Creek and the surrounding valley and, if the colors have started, we'll get great views and picture opportunities. Depending on the number of people we have, we may have the opportunity to set this up as a shuttle hike and hike from either the south side on the Wilson Mountain trail (#10) through to the North Wilson Mountain trail (#123), or vice versa. This will give us the opportunity to see great views of Sedona as well. The total distance would be about the same as a shuttle hike.
What to bring: 2+ liters of water, good hiking shoes, a camera, snacks and I always like to carry a $2 rain poncho in my pack just in case I forget to check weather. A warm layer would probably be advisable as well, as it could feel a bit cooler up there for us Phoenicians.
For east side commuters, we will meet at Tempe AMF Lanes on the southeast corner of Rural Road and Rte. 60 behind the Denny's at 7:15 AM and head up to the north valley meetup spot at 7:30 AM. We will meet in the north valley at the Red Robin parking lot on Happy Valley Road at 8:00 AM. Post a comment if you are interested in carpooling from the south end of town.
I expect the hike will take us about 3 - 4 hours. If we are on the road shortly after 8, we should be on the trail about 10:30 and finishing up about 1:30 - 2:30ish. After the hike, we can stop in Sedona for a late lunch and some fudge! I love to buy fudge there... If we have enough time, we can poke around in the shops too.
