El Golfo, Mexico - last fall trip!

  • Nov 9, 2012 · 6:00 PM

Hi, everybody.

we had so much fun in el golfo last time, that we are hauling our catamarans down there one last time for the fall season.  We go down friday night, camp at organ pipe and cross the border sat morning.  We return monday night, so you need to play hooky monday to join us.

EL golfo is a tiny mexican fishing village about 90 minutes South of yuma.  It hs 30 miles of undeveloped beach next to it.  We drive on the beach about 10 miles out of town, camp and sail our catamarans.  I have been going there for over a decade and it is one of my favorite places.

This is primitive car camping with no facilities.  Because we need to drive on the beach, this trip is restricted to four wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicles only.  we will have at least 2 catamarans on this trip, maybe as many as four.  We split the cost of gas and mexican insurance with the drivers and buy shrimp and firewood from the locals.  it is generally a pretty cheap trip.

Now, just a few minor details to explain:

Mexico is a foreign country(as in NOT the USA!)  This means that you need a valid passport to return..  The Mexicans will let you in without one, but the US bureaucrats will not allow you to return without a valid passport.  You must have one of these to join us.

Secondly, you are travelling South of the border.  This means no drugs(yes, that includes pot!), no guns and no ammunition.  If you are a hunter or a stoner you need to thoroughly clean out your vehicle of all contraband(including spent shotgun shells ) prior to leaving on the trip.  Your car will be searched politely and quickly by the mexican military.  they have dogs from the states.  Mexican prisons suck.  If you get busted, you are on your own.  If I see any contraband you will be told to leave.  Passengers will be left at the side of the road with their stuff.  No exceptions.

I will be limiting this trip to 13 people.  The attendees will also be limited by the number of suitable vehicles going.

Please do not sign up unless you intend to join us.  This requires significant planning and organization and if someone flakes out at the last minute it creates headache and hassle for everyone else.  i will be collecting a 50 dollar nonrefundable deposit from everyone by next wednesday, just to sort out who is serious about going.

If anyone has any questions, give me a call:[masked]-5166.

This will be a blast!

Had a great time. Everyone was so nice, and Pat certainly knows his way around the area which made things easy. Beautiful sailing.

Dang. Was hoping you would go in Dec. Like around the 12 or so. If you know dates for next year, or month. I would like to plan on coming down from CA. Thanks!
