Course Description:
Survival and Stuff You Ought to Know is a class which introduces people who play in the outdoors to basic survival and emergency skills. If you want to learn how to make a winter coat by tanning the hide of the wild game caught using your shoe lace or how to build a log cabin using only a sharp rock, this is not the class for you. We will learn to build a fire without using gasoline and flares, what the squiggly lines on the map mean, how to be alive the day after you are stranded and what to do until help arrives.
Topics:
*Stuff to carry
*Pre trip planning
*Basic map and compass
*How search and rescue will respond
*Lost person behavior
*Lost person procedures
*Expedient shelters
*Making fire
*Communicating and signaling
*A quick over view of things not taught in survival or first aid classes that are important to know: vehicle crash management, helicopter landing zones and swift water awareness.
