Seeing is not enough; you must feel what you photograph. Andre Kertesz. If you want your photos to tell a story, you need to see with your heart, not just your eyes. In this workshop we will explore how to become a better visual story teller through photography.
This famous street photo by Henri Cartier-Bresson is an example of capturing a simple moment of life that evokes emotion and tells a story. Bresson coined the term "the decisive moment". He was gifted at knowing how to click the shutter at just the perfect instant.
Timing is one element that helps tell a story. There are other key factors that contribute to creating images that move us, touch us, and connect us to each other.
In this workshop you will discover three secrets to creating photos that tell a compelling story. We will learn them by doing some street photography, but the techniques you learn can then be applied to other settings such as travel photography or family gatherings.
- How to capture a universal experience of life in a specific instance.
- How to express the essence of an emotion you feel when you see something that moves you.
- How to use composition, color, and light to establish the context of the story.
How we will work: I will provide examples of images that tell a powerful story and discuss what makes them so successful. I will give you tips for how to incorporate these ideas into your own work.
Then we will have a series of three 20 minute exercises where you will go on assignments in the Copley Square area to "get the story". During these assignments, I will work with each of you and offer ideas for making your images more powerful.
At the end of class we will meet for coffee, treats and critique so you can look at the photos done by others. This is a great opportunity to learn by looking at how classmates interpreted the same assignment in a completely different way.
WE always have lots of fun and learn something new. I hope you can join us this Saturday! All levels are welcome. Any type of camera, even your iPhone will work for this class.
