NOT every picture tells a story, but your photos will after this workshop.

Seeing is not enough; you must feel what you photograph. Andre Kertesz. If you want your photos to tell a story, you need to see with your heart, not just your eyes. In this workshop we will explore how to become a better visual story teller through photography.

This famous street photo by Henri Cartier-Bresson is an example of capturing a simple moment of life that evokes emotion and tells a story. Bresson coined the term "the decisive moment". He was gifted at knowing how to click the shutter at just the perfect instant.

Timing is one element that helps tell a story. There are other key factors that contribute to creating images that move us, touch us, and connect us to each other.

In this workshop you will discover three secrets to creating photos that tell a compelling story. We will learn them by doing some street photography, but the techniques you learn can then be applied to other settings such as travel photography or family gatherings.

  • How to capture a universal experience of life in a specific instance.
  • How to express the essence of an emotion you feel when you see something that moves you.
  • How to use composition, color, and light to establish the context of the story.

How we will work: I will provide examples of images that tell a powerful story and discuss what makes them so successful. I will give you tips for how to incorporate these ideas into your own work.

Then we will have a series of  three 20 minute exercises where you will go on assignments in the Copley Square area to "get the story". During these assignments, I will work with each of you and offer ideas for making your images more powerful.

At the end of class we will meet for coffee, treats and critique so you can look at the photos done by others. This is a great opportunity  to learn by looking at how classmates interpreted the same assignment in a completely different way.

WE always have lots of fun and learn something new. I hope you can join us this Saturday! All levels are welcome. Any type of camera, even your iPhone will work for this class.

Please reserve your space right away since this event is coming right up and I am limiting this class to 10 participants. Tuition for the workshop is $20.00

Looking forward to seeing you Saturday The weather is going to be great and there are many stories waiting to be told!

I really enjoyed being part of this group. I really like your mantra of getting in the moment. I think I am very guilty of some of things you discussed. I found it very relaxing to just relax and take in the environment and wait for the picture to come to me,

Suzanne, I would love to do this workshop -- sounds great. And Cartier-Bresson is one of my favorite old school photographers. But I'll being doing an arts fair -- my first in quite awhile. Hope that I make big money so I can attend more of your wonderful workshops.

Best of luck with the art fair. Your work is beautiful so I think you should do very well. Make sure to create a mailing list so you can keep in touch with the "lookers"

I understand. There is a public parking structure at 100 Clarendon Street right next to the Back Bay T stop. You should be able to google this and get directions. If you park in this building you will only have to walk about 2 blocks to the Library. The good thing is on Saturday the traffic won't be bad.

Where is the best parking? I'm not a fan of driving in Boston.
