What light magic lives in this river. Add the mullet doing their high dives & it was an experience that I'm grateful I got to see. Thanks, Jeff, for making this suggestion & my appreciation to you & Kim for generously giving me a ride. This is an exceptional group of seekers/explorers.

Great trip. Guides were very friendly and that was some of the neatest natural lights that I've seen Next time, I'll make sure to bring more bug spray. Luckily it seemed like Trish attracted the majority of them!

We had a great time! Unfortunately we didn't get to hang out as our own group, with over 60 people out last night, but the trip was great. The bioluminescence was very active for the last 45 min.s of the trip, and looking at the star filled sky was an extra bonus as there was very little light pollution to contend with. We even got to see a satellite zooming across the sky. There were tons of flying fish in parts that kept us on high alert, with a few close fly byes, but no direct hits. The 2 hour trek each way provided Michele, Kimberly, and I a chance to have some really engaging conversations and time to get to know one another quite well. A fantastic time for us and I hope everyone had just as good of time as we did.

I'm glad you guys had a great time! Awesome. Do you know if the rest..Ray, Trish and Barbie made it?

      June 29

    • Jeff

I know Ray and Trish made it, we had a quick introduction just prior to push off. I think I saw Barbie and her friend based on the profile picture on here, but I didn't get a chance to introduce myself before we set out.

From I-95 go to exit 231 which is County Road 5A.
**The BP Station by I-95 on 5A is your last opportunity for a restroom.
      1. Follow 5A East 1 mile to US 1/FL 5.
      2. Take a left/North on US 1/FL 5 travel approximately 5 miles. You will go over an overpass that goes over a railroad. Aprox. ¾ mile beyond overpass you will see a big brown sign for
Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. Just beyond that sign get into the long right hand turn lane which turns on to SR3/Kennedy Parkway on your right.
      3. Take Kennedy Parkway South 8.5 miles till you see the Haulover Canal
Drawbridge. Just before the bridge take a right. The road is unmarked - it starts out paved and turns to dirt. (It will turn to the left, then curve to the right along the canal). Follow it all the way to the end. That is where we will meet and launch the kayaks.

      June 28

    • Jeff

TAKE A RESTROOM BREAK BEFORE COMING OUT TO THE REFUGE.
Unfortunately there are no facilities at the launch site....

we will receive a 10% discount if we have 12 people going, 3. We have to pay upfront.

$3 is non-refundable, the rest I understand is refundable.

      June 18

    • Jeff

Michele, yes you can bring your kayak over to my home, and we'll leave from there. I need to Google map out how long of a drive it is from Valrico. I will want to leave early to ensure we aren't pressed for time. I'm thinking maybe 45 min to one hour cushion would be wise. Thoughts?

I would love to go but i need to rent a kayak and drive back the same night...who do i get in touch for the kayak and also the tour? Do i pay it directly to them?

Hi Barbie, so we can get the discount, I am calling in a paying in advance all at one time. So...to pay....RSVP and Meetup will ask you for $18. After that, go to the little 'Chip-In' button (look over to the left side of the website for a little piggy) and pay the rest ($13.50) ..sorry for the extra step to pay

I cannot imagine anyone wuestioning the cost of a float of this magnitude! I'm already committed to my friend Tina, of the Slackers to stay at her home befor and after the Econ or I would go and be grateful to be able to pay. 18.00$? is not enough to discourage me, I'd be there, but next time you do this I will be there, if at all possible.

    June 9

    • Karl

I agree with you Lois on the value. I think Michelle was thinking there was a way to do for $0...which I would be all for too! ;)

      June 9

    • lois v.

I'll cancel the Econ trip, if all I have to buy is food and enough gasoline to get there and back! (just kidding, hopefully I'll get a chance to join in next time) lois

  • michele c.

Karl, the organizer said he lives in the area & scouts out the best place. I looked up info & someone wrote that she launched from Haulover Canal which connects the Indian River lagoon to Mosquito lagoon. The best time to view this phenomenon is when the sky is darkest--5 days before or after a new moon. Cost from this vendor is listed at $35. & $39. on Sat.

    June 9

    • Karl

So ours is still a great deal...:)

      June 9

  • michele c.

Karl, I emailed the organizer & asked him to share how to do the paddle w/o a vendor & fee.

    June 9

    • Karl

      Thanks, Michelle

      June 9

  • michele c.

Jeff, either camping or driving home Sat would be fine. What's your preference?

    June 8

    • Jeff

We are going to drive back. It will get us back pretty late, but I am sure we will be pretty wired from the experience.

      June 9

  • michele c.

I see that Slackers is doing a bioluminescence trip at Parrish Park in Titusville in Aug. They must be going a different way as there is no vendor & no fee.

    June 9

    • Karl

INteresting...can you spy out details for us? I like no fee..

Karl, is it possible that my yak & I could get a ride w/you? Should I bring my sleeping bag & tent or do you think you'll drive back Sat?

    June 8

    • Karl

If I can go Michelle. I have a scheduling conflict I'm trying to work out. I should know by Wednesday if I can go or not..

      June 8

  • michele c.

Is there a carpool set up for this, and if so, will there be room to carry our yaks? Thanks.

    June 8

    • Karl

I've got the extender and carrying 3 is no problems at all. You have a wider bed so probably four (tilted sideways) will be very doable. I put those pool noodles on my straps so keep the kayaks nice and comfy ;)

Oh. what have I done now? I'm sorry but I've been committed to go on the Econ with the Slackers that week-end. Oh, Karl, I'm sorry. don't forget your glow stix or solar lights for front and back of your kayak.

      June 3

    • Karl

      Awesome! I'll make the reservation

      June 3

  • Karl

OK, we have some details on the trip:

    1. We are moving it to SATURDAY 8:30pm

The pressure to get from Tampa to East Coast before 8:30 after work on Friday is too much in our opinion.

    2. Before our discount, Tour costs $35 if you rent a kayak or $20 if you bring your own.

we will receive a 10% discount if we have 12 people going, 3. We have to pay upfront.

$3 is non-refundable, the rest I understand is refundable.

    4. I will pay upfront for us, if..

If you will post on the Event Board that you definitely are coming & whether its with or without kayak

    5. We are looking for places to stay.

*coming soon* We'll have details on some options along with pricing. SiSi is camping nearby. Jeff and Kim will likely rent a cabin or room. I'm not sure what I'll do.

Finally, I am going to try out the Meetup payment option. If it doesn't kick in...I may have to REMOVE YOU and then I'll just ask you to re-RSVP so it will ask for the money.

You know my # if you need to ask a question

    Karl

    June 3

    • Karl

Thanks, Jeff! ...I see you show as Paid. For everyone: **You do not have to pay until AFTER I email you a receipt from the Tour** Its our first activity after all and I don't feel right asking for that much trust right off the bat ;) As soon as everyone posts "I'm going" I'll call up and reserve our spots..

      June 3

    • Karl

BTW - Thanks Lois!! Great idea!

  • Karl

Here's a possibility on the camping..Riverwood Park Campground. Right on Mosquito Lagoon
    https://www.google.com/maps/plac...

    May 24

    • Penny

Because camping on a lake called mosquito lagoon sounds awesome. :-) I did this paddle before and there will be bugs. Bring bug spray. Car pooling would be a good idea because there wasn't a parking lot and you park along the side of a narrow road that has channels on each side. The company that runs the paddles does more than one paddle a night with many people. Be prepared to carry your gear to the launch site. Even with all these negatives the paddle is worth the trip. Have fun.

      June 2

  • Trish S.

So are we supposed to purchase tickets on our own? The only thing showing available is at 8:30

    1 · June 1

    • Jeff

I am pretty sure this trip will be at 8:30. Karl is going to call and ask them a few questions I think to try and orchestrate a group rate as well as finding out some overnight stay options to consider. There is also a possibility this trip will have to be Saturday evening due to the start time most likely being at @ 8:30.

      1 · June 1

    • Karl

Sorry, Trish! My bad. Last week had an emergency come up so I was very thrown off ..never made the call. I'll be sure to do that tomorrow. Jeff & I will kick around what I find out and post hopefully on Tuesday!
