100 Strangers Project - Models welcome as well!

Looks like there is some interest for an evening street shoot in Ybor. How does Thursday July 10th work? The weekends can be a bit crazy, but we can try a weekend if this doesn't work for enough of you. We can also plan another shoot for a weekend at a later date to accommodate other folks if enough people can make Thursday.

Let's meet by the stairs on the north east corner of the parking garage on 16th street. The garage is between 15th and 16 st, just south of 7th ave and the entrance to Ybor Centro.

6:30 should allow for some daylight shooting and then some night shots as well.

A note to everyone. Be sure to upload hi res pictures of the models to their folders! They model for free to get shots for their personal use or portfolios. Be sure to give them your best shots in their folders!

I'm going to get in contact with you tonight.

      July 10

    • Raymond B.

Sorry for all the confusion Antonio! It was hard to hear you on the phone with all the street noise. I thought I was giving you the info you needed, but it obviously was confusing on both ends of the call. Hopefully we'll do better next time!

  • Nicole K.

Sorry I was unable to make it tonight i got a call from petsmart this morning and they wanted me to start working today and i didn't get off till 8. I'm sorry about not making it.

Slow start with a little rain, but, it cleared and we got a lot of great shots. We lost some models due to early bad weather and some long drives, but it is the season and we always role the dice on an outdoor shoot. The group was fairly large, but I hope most got the help and attention they wanted! We'll get better the more of these we do! Don't be afraid to grab us for a question even if we are shooting!

FWIW I had a long drive I would be less inclined to chance it too. It still looks better than it did earlier, so I'll make the drive from Brandon. http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=TBW&product=N1P&overlay=11101111&loop=yes

Any chance of this rescheduling or happening again soon in the near future?? Doesn't look like I'm gonna be able to make it out tonight.

    • Bobby A.

One of the best things about meetup is that anyone can suggest an event like this (hint hint. lol). If 3 people indicate they are interested it automatically changes from a Suggested to become an Upcoming event.

    Should I use a 35-80mm or a fixed 50mm?

    July 6

    • Raymond B.

Yes to Bobby's remark. 35 -80 is perfect in the daylight and the 50 for existing light after dark!

      1 · July 6

    • Marisela M.

I think both sounds like a perfect idea.

      July 6

  • Elisa R.

I only have the 18 - 55 mm and the 55 - 300 mm lens, right now for my camera, I cant afford buy a new one, Can I use those one for take the pictures in this event?

    June 25

    • Bobby A.

Those should cover most situations, and offer good choices for lens lengths.

      1 · June 25

    • Raymond B.

Yes, the[masked] is great for candid shots at a distance. The 18-55 will be more forgiving in lower light. Bring a tripod if you have one.

      July 6

  • Mary Beth S.

Would you recommend buying a used 35mm f1.8 lens? Amazon has a new one for $196.95, used is $149.00

    June 24

    • Raymond B.

If you can afford the difference in price, new is never bad. The good thing with a good quality used lens is that if you find you don't use it much, you can resell it for what you paid or close to it!

      1 · July 6

  • Jeff T.

... and/or use flash for near objects.

    June 25

  • Jeff T.

Absolutely. When it get dark, just use your tripod.

    June 25

  • Jeff T.

I buy used all the time on E-Bay. Just make certain that the seller has a high star rating and that the lens is in perfect condition as evidenced by the photographs. By the way, this Nikon 35mm lens is the "deal of the century". The quality of optics you get for $200 is absolutely amazing. One thing about fast f1.8 or f1.4 lenses is that focus calibration becomes important. Most consumer or prosumer cameras do not have a facility to adjust focus calibration, so it is important that the lens, itself, is correctly calibrated. If you buy the lens from Adorama, B&H or Best Buy, you can always return it, if it is not right (or send to Nikon or Canon for correction). Another thing to watch-out for on E-Bay is that the lens is not Grey Market. If it is, Nikon or Canon USA will not service it.

Obviously, the safest bet would be to buy new.

    1 · June 25

  • Jeff T.

For those relatively new to photography:

If you, perhaps, purchased your camera with the standard 18-55mm zoom, I highly recommend that you purchase a fixed or prime lens. For under $150, you can purchase either a Nikon or Canon 35mm f1.8 (52mm equivalent) from E-Bay and other sources. Such lenses will give you low-light capability & the image quality will be notably superior to the zoom lenses. Shooting with a prime lens will help you take your photography to the next level as you become more conscious of perspective and framing. Photography is best learned and refined with prime lenses. A fast prime lens will definitely help you on this type of shoot. If you do not have a prime lens, as Ray recommended, you should bring a tripod (and/or flash). On my last vacation, I took one small camera with a fixed 35mm f2 lens. You can get an idea of what can be done with photographic simplicity if you go to my website: www.gr8photography.com, then go to "Italy Shots".

This sounds like a lot of fun but I am not sure if I will be able to make it or not. I will know as it gets closer if I am able to make it or not! I have never tried any night photography so I might be doing more observing than shooting unless there is a kind soul who wants to help me out and/or give me some tips! =)

    June 23

    • Raymond B.

We all are kind souls and willing to help! That's what the group is about. Just ask! We will have daylight shooting as well as night. If you have a fast lens...like a 50mm f1.8 or a f2.8 zoom, bring it. A tripod is useful also...especially if you don't have a fast lens!

      2 · June 24

    • Tricia Fox M.

I have a tripod a 50mm f2.8 and a flash (that I am clueless how to use)! =) Thanks! I am really excited!

      June 24

  • Raymond B.

This shoot will afford street "people" shots, detail shots, architecture...bring your imaginations! For the night shots, bring a fast lens if you have one...like a 50mm f1.8 or a f2.8 zoom. A tripod is useful also...especially if you don't have a fast lens! Also, you can bring a light weight flash (on or off camera (I can give some pointers on bouncing light, rim lighting, etc) for posed shots both day and night.

I would like ybor, but we would have to go @night wouldn't we.

    May 29

    • Kathy E.

Ybor at night offers a whole different perspective and safety is a concern, especially on weekends.

      June 17

    • Bobby A.

The more popular streets of Ybor are about average if sometimes a bit eccentric in the early evening hours, especially on weekdays. There should also be a bit of a safety in numbers element to our outing.

      1 · June 22

  • Caleb R.

Ybor has interesting architecture as well as street life. Models are welcome as well because there are ample places for fun and interesting backdrops. We can get a variety of shots and find something for everyone. I hope to see a goodly number sign up!

I've felt drawn to the prospect of "street photography" and catching total strangers doing normal everyday things after reading about Vivian Maier, and her thousands of street photos that would have been lost. Just fascinating photos. This challenge would be a great start.
