Class: Software Defined Radio

Description: Introduction to Software Defined Radio (SDR) is a brief overview of the concepts, basic equipment, and usages for beginners. The course will encompass an intro to GNURadio as well as other SDR related software and is the first in a series of classes exploring radio and signals theory.

Instructor: Joe Blankenship (http://www.meetup.com/Tampa-Hackerspace/members/130184182/)

Materials: We'll provide the SDR or you can bring your own. The one we're offering is from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009U7WZCA/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You should have a laptop with VirtualBox ( https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads )already installed and the Kali ISO ( http://www.kali.org/downloads/ ) or have a bootable flash drive with Kali ready to go. We'll have the images available onsite if you need help but please arrive early so that we don't take up class time getting your computer ready.

In response to a question during the course: The mystery signal is on 4.625 MHz AM, has a main 20-kilowatt transmitter, a 5-kilowatt backup transmitter, and a horizontal-dipole antenna. So the answer is yes, SDR can and does pick this up. For the dongle received in the course, you would need the ham it up board. http://uvb-76.net/

Given the watts and the modulation type, that signal should travel some distance, but the angle, polarization, and antenna design might limit your ability to receive it in the western hemisphere with realible results, but given ideal conditions, skip, climate conditions, etc. it's possible MAYBE on the west coast.

    Good luck and happy hacking!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
