Screenplay Focus Group

Many people aspire to write the next big blockbuster hit coming to theatres across the nation. However, unlike other genres of writing, there are rules and conventions that must be addressed when writing a screenplay. This includes how screenplays differ from other forms, like novels, and what exactly needs to happen in the first ten pages.

The screenwriting focus group will discuss the form of screenwriting. We'll read examples of existing screenplays from TV shows like Lost to award-winning movies like Back to the Future. We'll discuss the elements that made them successful and begin to employ them in our own scripts. Additionally, we'll work on developing good habits and routines in our own lives that successful screenwriters use. We'll share our work with the group and help to hold each other accountable to our writing goals.

The first screenwriting focus group meeting is on May 14th at 7pm at the Starbucks on Linebaugh and Dale Mabry. We'll discuss what we want out of this group and decide how often we'd like to meet. Hope to see you there.

Membership in Tampa Writers Alliance is required for meetings past the initial visit.

Do you write or long to write mysteries, intrigue, or true crime? Are these subplots in your work? Are you stumped on how to write a crime scene or its aftermath? No? Then just come and listen to one of the most entertaining speakers TWA has ever hosted.
At TWA’s general meeting on January 7, 2015 (7 pm, Carrollwood Barnes & Noble), homicide detective CHUCK MASSUCCI will discuss his career experiences. Come here what “really happens” behind the "yellow tape."

Writing scripts, whether for screenplay or stage, requires specific formatting . . . a headache if you are trying to work in Word. Just thought I'd let everyone know about an excellent scripting software. Celtx:https://www.celtx.com/services.html. The student version (free) allows you to:

    Write scripts & novels
    Share with anyone

I would recommend this software as a group "standard" because it would minimize (and possibly even eliminate) formatting errors, which at a critique level, aggravate readers. We might as well get used to what a "real" script looks like, instead of trying to "invent" a format. An added plus is that the software follows industry standards, so, if you write a great script, you have a better chance of it going somewhere.

I attended the last screenwriters group. It was interesting and informative.
I'd like it to involve the gambit of how-to, critique and experience sharing.
I would suggest a more central area like Ybor or something similar.
I will attend the next one, hope to see all interested there.

Hi Melanie - it sounds like at least a few of us have an interest in attending a screenwriters' group. Would it be of any value to plan on continuing the meeting at Starbuck's to see if it generates any further interest from Tampa screenwriters? I don't have the experience or the bandwidth to moderate (I also don't live in Carrollwood and have to travel fairly far to get to the meeting), but would love to attend a Tampa-area screenwriters' group if one were to be revived. :)

Hi Frank. That's because these are recurring meet ups for a group that used to meet. The group doesn't meet anymore and I've emailed TWA members to remove the meet ups on this site to no success. I used to moderate the group but people wouldn't show up when there were actual meetings. Unless there is a moderator chosen (and shown on meetup) I'd assume this meeting has not been revived.

First of all - I went to Starbucks in July and June. June - I was the only one there. July - two folks besides me showed up. Is Starbuck's not a good meeting place? In order to get the screenwriting ground back off the ground, we need to have screenwriters show up. All comments are welcome! [masked]

For all folks planning on attending the screenwriters meeting tonight Tues 7/8, the meeting starts at 7 and runs to no later than 9. It will be at the B & N where we can talk about next meeting's location. I will be there about 6:30. Frank

Hey, Frank. Would you be interested in facilitating this Tuesday night MeetUp? Basically, we're trying to broaden the TWA's offerings but having difficulty finding a lead guy or gal. I recommend meeting at the Barnes and Noble vs the Starbucks: More room.
    Let me know your thoughts....

Hi John! :) Is this a monthly or bi-monthly meeting? I already go to the Wed. critique group, so won't be able to go to the screenwriters' group this time around, but hopefully will be able to go to a future SW meetup.

Hi there--I won't be able to go this time around, but just wondering if this is intended as a critique or more of a how-to group.

I would love to be able to go, but I'm pretty much booked on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Hope this is a GO!

Hi Sandra, can you please remove the screenplay group's meeting dates on Meetup or just remove them. I'm still getting emails from people who think this is still a meeting for TWA, who show up and there's no one there to meet them. This meeting hasn't met since 2013.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
