I co-own a tiny startup in digital filter technology, and I also own a solo editorial business specializing in science fiction and fantasy. I'm both a science and arts geek.
On an infrastructure basis, I think it's vital that we have rapid mass transit between Hillsborough and Pinellas. Without that, St. Pete will remain a retirement community. I think we perhaps need more forward-thinking city leadership. On a tech-community level, I think we are yet developing our identity and focus, although it seems to be coalescing around mobile development. Tampa Bay has many of the ingredients to be a strong tech region--we should, at least, be attracting business because our real estate is less expensive than other major cities and our surroundings and weather beautiful (well, other than the monsoons, tornadoes, and hurricanes, and the cost of insurance for businesses here is a whole 'nother soapbox). And we have some really smart and creative people here. But I think we have a ways to go before the rest of the country takes us seriously as a grownup tech community.
St. Pete resident by way of Seattle. I think Tampa Bay is positioned to be the Next Big Thing in tech development, and I'd like to help facilitate that!
