Chicago Tech January Meetup w/Jason Fried @Officeport

OfficePort CHI (map)

Selected By: Justyn

Join us January 20th at OfficePort for guest speaker Jason Fried (37 Signals) and presentations from local startups and entrepreneurs.

Our first event was a great opportunity to socialize. This time you'll want to bring a notepad in addition to your thirst. I've posted some photos from Thursday's event as well.

More details to follow. If you or someone you know would like to present during the startup segment, please email me ASAP. We'll have roughly 4 spots for a 5-minute presentation & demo followed by panel feedback and Q&A. Please provide as much info as you can to help us narrow the selection. Presenters will be announced in a future email.

Please RSVP for this one early. We're expecting a full house.

Any way to add some extra seats or standing room only for those of us on the waiting list? I would really love to attend!

Thank you everyone who attended and our participants! I'm really grateful to be able to help put this together for you all. We need to work on the time issues and found a few other things we can improve on. Thanks for rolling with the punches while we figure this whole "Event Guessing" thing out! Please keep an eye on your email later today for more details on our startups and sponsors. Justyn

Great meeting and the time-overruns weren't a big deal because the subject matter was interesting. I might start the next event at 6:00pm, just because everyone seemed to need to bolt around 8:00pm. The seating was fine and the OfficePort space was comfortable. The only big recommendation I have is adding water/cokes to the drink list since some folks don't drink alcohol (I hear a few people asking). I won't turn down beer, myself, though. While I know you had a wait list, I think this group size (150) is ideal if you can afford it. When it gets bigger, like Tech Cocktail, the noise levels just blows out the ability to concentrate.

Speaker was great. Beer & Beverage was great. Audience was great (networking was very good). Venue was really good. The event was organized well. Unfortunately, I had to leave right as the startup demos began, so I can't comment on them, but I expect they were good as well.

Awesome Talk by Jason Fried, it would be great to here from other great chicago entrepreneurs
  • Peter Harkins
Great presentations, food, drink, and space, but it ran very long (until around 10:15 PM). I'm happy I attended, but it sure ended up being late.
  • Clyde Danganan
Great speaker in an excellent venue. Thanks for organizing this! I heard a lot of great ideas and look forward to cultivating future collaborations.

The biggest crowd I've seen in that space ... not sure why it pulled so well, as the program was "interesting" but not exactly ground-breaking. Perhaps it's an indication of the strength of the Chicago Tech group.
  • Jose Rubio
Great Meetup. Ran a bit long, but other than that it was great.
  • Ray Hightower
Great presentation by Jason Fried. Great networking with all of the other attendees. Great marketing/promotion by the organizers as evidenced by the attendance. One concern: Time. A meetup that lasts past 9pm can take a lot out of you, especially if you have to work the next morning. There was so much good content in this event that it could have been split into two.
  • Jeff Huber
This was a great event. Thoroughly enjoyed Jason Fried's discussion and the startup presentations.
  • Rosemary Zalewski
good talk, but should have been shorter. shorter Q & A too.
  • Jake Lumetta
Ran a little long. Tough to manage 150 people.
  • Bob Brill
great attendees and speaker, tasty food
  • Curt Handley, Esq.
Great topics and a great group of people! I hope to do a presentation on the legal considerations for startups at one of the upcoming meetings.
