Chicago Tech January Meetup w/Jason Fried @Officeport

Join us January 20th at OfficePort for guest speaker Jason Fried (37 Signals) and presentations from local startups and entrepreneurs. Our first
event was a great opportunity to socialize. This time you'll want to bring a notepad in addition to your thirst. I've posted some photos from Thursday's event as well. More details to follow. If you or someone you know would like to present during the startup segment, please email me ASAP. We'll have roughly 4 spots for a 5-minute presentation & demo followed by panel feedback and Q&A. Please provide as much info as you can to help us narrow the selection. Presenters will be announced in a future email. Please RSVP for this one early. We're expecting a full house.

I only got to stay for Jason's talk, and some of the mingling directly afterwards. It would help a lot if the events would start on time, so I could stay for a bit longer.

Also, I'm confused about the venue - was it under construction or something? It seemed like an odd place to hold an event.

Overall, though, I enjoyed it. It was a good mix of people, and although I thought some of Jason's initial, scripted speech was a bit over the top, I enjoyed the Q&A session, which seemed a bit more down to earth.

Congratulations on drawing such a crowd. For future meetings, respectfully I suggest fewer agenda items. That was the first time in 11 years a networking/learning event of this type that I attended lasted that long. Many had to get home to their families via trains, cars, buses, & skateboards. By the time we left, the bar was closed at next-door Hotel Burnham, where I had planned to debrief with a pal about the evening. Closed bars mean the meeting was too long. :-) Otherwise, GREAT JOB! Thank you. -JR

Thank you everyone who attended and our participants! I'm really grateful to be able to help put this together for you all. We need to work on the time issues and found a few other things we can improve on. Thanks for rolling with the punches while we figure this whole "Event Guessing" thing out!

Please keep an eye on your email later today for more details on our startups and sponsors.

Great meeting and the time-overruns weren't a big deal because the subject matter was interesting. I might start the next event at 6:00pm, just because everyone seemed to need to bolt around 8:00pm. The seating was fine and the OfficePort space was comfortable.

The only big recommendation I have is adding water/cokes to the drink list since some folks don't drink alcohol (I hear a few people asking). I won't turn down beer, myself, though.

While I know you had a wait list, I think this group size (150) is ideal if you can afford it. When it gets bigger, like Tech Cocktail, the noise levels just blows out the ability to concentrate.

Speaker was great. Beer & Beverage was great. Audience was great (networking was very good). Venue was really good. The event was organized well. Unfortunately, I had to leave right as the startup demos began, so I can't comment on them, but I expect they were good as well.

Great presentations, food, drink, and space, but it ran very long (until around 10:15 PM). I'm happy I attended, but it sure ended up being late.

The biggest crowd I've seen in that space ... not sure why it pulled so well, as the program was "interesting" but not exactly ground-breaking. Perhaps it's an indication of the strength of the Chicago Tech group.

Well run event -- sort of wish the presentation projector was a little bit bigger, but besides that, great job. Didn't feel over produced, so the focus was on the content, presenters, and free beer.

Great presentation by Jason Fried. Great networking with all of the other attendees. Great marketing/promotion by the organizers as evidenced by the attendance. One concern: Time. A meetup that lasts past 9pm can take a lot out of you, especially if you have to work the next morning. There was so much good content in this event that it could have been split into two.

Great night. Super informative and useful. Jason Fried was a very good speaker and got his meaning across easily. Packed house with a good mix of people. Could stand more women. (I recommend 30 reserved spaces next time!)

Thanks, Justyn, Ryan and Zishan. What's next?!
