Don't limit yourself to the Arduino brand. The Arduino compatible Teensy ++2 and 3.0 are very able units that are fully compatible and in some cases have enhanced libraries that improve performance.

I usually end up using Teensy boards in my projects. For the first time using Arduino, please get an official board. This is the easiest way to get up and started. Plus, you get all of the shield add ons. Once you have the Arduino board going, then branch out to the clones.

They will be happy to share their thoughts and recommendations. I personally have an UNO, a Leonardo, a couple of Mini's, and just ordered a Nano.

https://www.sparkfun.c... and https://www.adafruit.c... are two popular USA based Arduino sellers. I am sure other meetup members will have additional companies to to check out. FWIW, you can even find Arduinos for sale at Amazon.Com.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
