This meetup group is open to anyone who likes to play with string. Although we are primarily a knitting group, we welcome crocheters, weavers, spinners, embroiderers ... anyone who plays with fiber.
I created this group in July of 2006 because I wanted to join a social group whose only purpose was to gather for the joy of meeting other people while being creative with yarn. At this time, there was no such group in my area, so I created the Tempe Knitting Meetup. The name is not exactly clever, and is a bit of a misnomer as we meet in Chandler, but my home is in Tempe, and it's my group, so there!
We do meet nearly every Tuesday from around 4:30 pm until at least 7 pm at the Wildflower Bread Company in Chandler Fashion Square. Chandler Fashion Square is located at the Loop 101 and Chandler Road in Chandler. Wildflower is located on the east side of the shopping center, between Macy's and Dillard's. There is a mall entrance directly adjacent to the Wildflower. Look for us on the east end of the restaurant at the large tables. And yes, we do meet nearly every Tuesday of the year; we take a couple of weeks off between Christmas and New Year's.
We do charge a $1 "dues" for each week that you attend. The money collected from the dues goes towards the cost of maintaining the Meetup site, as well as buy the raffle prizes that are given out every week. The weekly raffle prizes have included stitch markers, bumper stickers, tape measures, copies of pattern, knitting notions, and all sort of little yarn-connected objects. In the spirit of fairness, the weekly raffle winner goes on a "list" for the next four weeks in which the winner doesn't get entered in the raffle. This gives other people an opportunity to win because there are some very very lucky ducks out there.
At the end of every month, we also hold a Large Great Awesome Kahuna Monthly Raffle Prize, which in the past has been swifts, yarn ball winders, Malabri-i-i-i-i-i-igo yarn, Soak brand wool wash, and fantastic project bags full of knitting goodies. In order to enter the monthly raffle, the cost is $1 per ticket. You can enter as many times as you like, and you can win every month, and you don't have to be present to win.
The format of the Tempe Knitting Meetup is strictly social, and is NOT set up to teach beginning knitting. Each person is welcome to work on their own projects, have some dinner, play on their tablets and smart phones, whatever tickles their fancy. Many of our members do charity knitting, but this is not a requirement for our group. We are not a teaching group, but we all are ready to assist with reading a pattern, helping teach a new stitch, or picking up a dropped stitch. However, if you have never picked up a pair of needles in your life, or if the last time you tried to knit was a couple of decades ago, I highly recommend getting lessons from a Knitting Master. Peggy Coomans, a member of our group, is a very accomplished knitter, designer, and teacher. If you'd like to learn (or re-learn) how to knit, here is her contact information:

Please come and join us some Tuesday night! Our group is very vibrant (perhaps a bit obnoxious) but I have had a magnificent time hosting the Tempe Knitting Meetup. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
