6.5 mile fall foliage hike on the John Muir Trail

October reliably offers some of the best hiking of the year. Join us as we walk in John Muir's footsteps on this 6.5 mile moderately easy hike along the John Muir Trail (JMT) along the banks of the Hiwassee River.

We'll meet at 9am in the gravel lot across the street from the Hiwassee Corner Market. From there we will drive to the Childers Creek trailhead in Reliance, TN.

Our hike will follow the JMT approximately 3.25 miles to the Pine Ticket Picnic Area where we will enjoy lunch along the banks of the Hiwassee River and receive an update on the Tennessee Wilderness Act from hke leader Erin Ouzts Durant.  After lunch we will return to our vehicles.  Bring a camera! The colors should be nearing peak, and the Hiwassee River Gorge is beautiful.

Well done. Although mostly easy, felt like the trail slides toward moderate in parts.

Hello everyone! My name is Erin Durant, and I'm the TN Wild Outings Coordinator. Though I married a Chattanooga native and have been in and out of town over the past few years, I just recently moved back to Chattanooga after spending the summer working in Glacier National Park in Montana. I'll be leading this hike tomorrow, and I'm excited to share this gorgeous place with you folks! I did scout out the trail on Thursday. There is 1 tree down that requires a little crawling under, but besides that the trail is in great condition. The leaves have started changing colors, making this hike even more beautiful. If you plan on hiking with me, please bring water, food, layers, a camera, and sturdy footwear. The weather is supposed to be a high of 69 and mostly cloudy with a 0% chance of rain. There is a waiting list for this trip, so if you don't plan on showing up, please let us know so that someone else can take your spot. I look forward to seeing all of you in the morning!

You were a terrific guide and leader of our group today. I loved that you carried a book on wildflowers and we got to search for those beautiful "hearts a bursting" (did I get that righ? LOL!) flowers...thank you for that! Matter of fact, you pointed out all kinds of beauty found on that trail and I really appreciate it...looking forward to hiking with you again...you ROCK!

It's a shame only 9 of us showed up. We waited quite a while, too. What a wonderful hike though. Erin, you are the bomb! Your plant and tree knowledge is top notch, and you're a very patient and fun hike leader. I do hope you'll grace us with your presence again soon. (There IS also that uncle-in-law issue we must attend to.) Thanks so much for a great hike.

Hey...I thought that uncle-in-law issue was directed at ALL of us standing in that circle! Imagine him with a harem made up of all of us...Erin...would that be too daunting for him??? LOL! Poor Uncle :)

We are thinking of you and Jeff and missing both of you, but wishing you good luck and vibes in your new endeavors!

I agree with Natasha about Erin. She is a sweet gal who is attentive to the needs and safety of her hikers and knowledgeable about the outdoors. Love the fact that she brought her thick wildflower book with her in her backpack annd helped us identify various plants along the way:-) I will remember the "Hearts a-bursting" for a while.

Schedule changed. Hate to give up this outing, the area is beautiful. Looks like plenty of people on the wait list ready to take my place. Enjoy!

Thanks, Al, for the comment about it being 'extra' easy. For me, it needs to be easy to be enjoyable.

Would anyone like to carpool from Grace Episcopal Church, upper parking lot, at corner of Brainerd Rd and Belvoir Ave?

This is an extra easy hike. I used to take Cub Scouts every year on a family hike along this trail.
