National Trails Day snorkel trip on Citico Creek!

Join us as we explore the chilly water of Citico Creek with wetsuit, snorkel and mask. Citico Creek is one of the most biologically rich temperate creeks in the USA.  It contains more species of fish than the entire Colorado River watershed!!

This trip costs $20.  That includes rental of a wetsuit, mask and snorkel, along with expert guides provided by the Forest Service. We will meet at 9 am at the Cherohala Skyway Visitors Center and carpool to our put-in location.  This requires driving on some gravel roads. Please bring a bag lunch, towel, and water shoes (tevas or chacos, or old sneakers) and prepare to be blown away by the underwater world in Citico Creek.

There is an age limit of 12 imposed by the Forest Service. Children 12 and up are strongly encouraged to attend.

snorkeling was fun although my grandaughter and I were not able to stay long, we enjoyed it and would like to try it again. I do suggest the guide make a trip to the put in site first so he knows for sure where it is! The ride over the mountain was rather fun though

Loved adventuring into the water to see schools of baby fish, gar, turtles and darters. Magical. Enjoyed trip leader Jim Pfister's rendition of Aldo Leopold's "Thinking Like a Mountain" during our lunch. Special thanks to the aquatics department of the Cherokee National Forest for their fish wisdom and helping me feel safe while playing in the water. I love exploring our beautiful wild.

Hate to miss this Jeff. I got a first degree burn after a bad sunburn on my leg and it got infected . I need to stay out of river and lakes til it's completely healed. Let me know if rescheduled.

Hey all! Couple things. Just spoke to Jim Herrig, Aquatic Biologist for the Cherokee. He said the colors of the fish are AMAZING & the water has warmed up. There is a possibility of heavy rains Thur/Fri. If it rains too hard for too long the river might rise to dangerous levels requiring us to postpone. Jim doesn't expect that to happen but its a possibility. Please visit this page Friday night before heading out. Jim will call if we need to cancel. I'm optimistic & the weather looks great!

A few more things. You will need watershoes like Tevas or Chacos or an old pair of sneakers. There will be a couple of tents so you can change in privacy if you so desire. Please pack a lunch and bring water. Lastly, this trip will fill up so please double check you plans. If you can't make it for some reason please change your RSVP. Thanks so much! Call if any questions. Jeff[masked]

Jim Pfitzer will be leading this trip for us. He will be at the Starbucks on 2217 Hamilton Place Blvd, Chattanooga from 7:00 - 7:15am. That's off Shallowford Rd right off exit 5 on I-75. If you want to ride share or convoy, be sure to meet the group there. It is customary to provide gas $ if you ride with someone. Meeting place #2 is the Cherohala Skyway Visitors Center. Be sure to be there by 9:15am! Citico Creek is another 40 minutes away. Cash or checks payable to Wild South please. T/Y

I would assume you could bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them?
