6.5 mile hike on the John Muir Trail near Reliance, TN

Join us for a 6.5 mile out & back hike on the John Muir Trail.  After rendezvousing at the Hiwassee Corner Market we'll drive 10 minutes to the Childers Creek Trailhead where we will start our hike.  We'll walk 3 miles to the Big Bend (where there is a pit toilet) and then continue a quarter mile further to the Big Pine Thicket Picnic Area where we will have lunch along the river.  After lunch we'll walk back to our starting point.

This hike is relatively easy, but will be graded a moderate hike because of it's length. Blaze orange or red is encouraged as outer wear, because it is still hunting season in the forest.  Our leader will read from John Muir and Aldo Leopold over lunch and provide an update on the Tennessee Wilderness Act of 2011.  Don;t miss this hike if you haven't done it before!  It's beautiful!

Details for an optional carpool from Chattanooga will be posted next week.

For those interested in carpooling from Chattanooga, we can meet at 8:45am at our usual spot, Starbucks at 2217 Hamilton Place Blvd, Chattanooga. This is off I-75 at Exit 5, Shallowford Road. This is just in front of Alexanders Restaurant across from the Old Navy. We'll leave the Starbucks around 9a to drive to the intersection of Hwy 411 & 30 and the Hiwassee Corner Market. We'll leave there fro the trailhead shortly after 10a. Questions? Call me. Travel safe! And don't speed through Benton unless you want a ticket. Jeff[masked]

The weather is looking nice for Saturday! Overcast, temps in 60s, and very little chance of rain. It is never a bad idea however to have a rain jacket in your day pack. Especially in the winter. A cold rain can be dangerous.
