Meeting Time: 5:40 PM. Feel free to come a few minutes early to mix and mingle with other hikers.
Meeting Place: Picnic Area 9.
Hike Distance: 3 miles-ish with extra 1/2 mile option
Estimated Hike Time: 2 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate climbs, paved trails for advanced beginners. Some moderate climbs into the park and up to the overlook at Edwin Warner. Optional 2nd climb to the overlook.
Hike Leader: Kathryn Darden
Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome. Well-behaved children are welcome. Details below.
Note: This is the longer, steeper version of my usual beginners hike. Please read the entire description before you sign up.
Enjoy the scenery at Edwin Warner Park on the paved road that circles the park. This is a great hike for people and dogs who can walk and climb 3+ miles or so at a steady pace with an optional loop to the scenic overlook.
* This is a beginners hike because of the slower pace and paved road, but it is for advanced beginners because there is a steady incline up into the park, we maintain a steady pace, there are is another incline up to the overlook, and it is a 3 mile hike plus another half mile optional. Please do not come if you are not sure you can walk at least 3 miles without rest breaks.
If you are not sure you or your dog can hike 3+ miles without rest breaks, try it in your neighborhood or local park to see if you are up to it. While we don't go full speed, we do keep a steady pace so the group can enjoy the many health benefits of hiking. This hike is not appropriate for those who are not in good physical shape, and even at our slower pace, it is not a slow stroll in the park.
There will only be two short rest stops: one at the top of the first climb into the park and another at the overlook. Winded hikers can also rest while the rest of the group climbs up to the overlook.
If you are a fast walker, please note that you are signing up for a slower hike.
Photographers welcome. Our pace is slow enough to allow people to stop to take pictures and catch up with the group.
Dogs welcome IF they are well behaved and LEASHED AT ALL TIMES. Dog leashes should be 6 ft. long or less per park rules so dogs don't get in the way of joggers and bikers. If your dog does not get along well with other dogs or strangers, please do not bring him/her.
Children welcome IF they are well behaved and can keep up. Rowdy behavior, running in and out around hikers, fighting/mock fighting, throwing things, yelling and crying are not acceptable on a group hike where people have come to relax while hiking and enjoying nature. If your children are disruptive, you and your children may be asked to leave.
It will be daylight when we start and dark when we leave, so bring a flashlight if you want.
Take Old Hickory Blvd. from Brentwood or Bellvue to Vaughn's Road (across from the Steeplechase entrance). Pass the model airplane field and the dog park and turn right into the park. Picnic Area 9 is the last parking area at the end of the drive into Edwin Warner Park off of Vaughn's Road. Allow yourself plenty of time to find it.
If you are familiar with the park and would act as a sweeper to walk at the end of the line and make sure everyone finishes without getting lost, let me (Kathryn) know in the comments below or tell me when you arrive.
If you RSVP, please give 12 hours notice if you must cancel.
THIS HIKE WILL BE CANCELED IN THE EVENT OF RAIN OR OMINOUS WEATHER IN THE BELLEVUE AREA 1/2 HOUR BEFORE HIKE TIME.
