HOW THE GROUP GOT ITS NAME. Cabaret means intimacy. Connection. The entertaining of big ideas and big emotions in small spaces.
It's origin is in the French word for wine cellar or tavern and was born 132 years ago when Paris was the glittering capitol of the world.
Cabaret exploded in 1920s and 30s Berlin to encompass song, spoken word, poetry, satire, juggling, pantomime, dance, burlesque, magic, and more, and that's where it got its name, "die Zehnte Muse." The ancient muses and daughters of Zeus, you see, each had their domain in the arts. A new patron goddess was needed to join her sisters. Cabaret was her name. Cabaret, the Tenth Muse.
Today cabaret can be experienced across the globe. Here in NYC, it is experiencing a renaissance. I've been championing the roots of the artform for 18 years as singer-actress, producer and director.
When I discovered cabaret's fantastic history, flexibility and diversity, I made music my career. My own song has led me to merging many musical styles, eras and languages. Organizing the Tenth Muse Meetup is an exciting step along the way!
