"Los Remedios del Pueblo" (The People's Medicine) is an introduction to the traditional healing uses of plants and ritual from Mexico and the south-western United States.

This class will explore the social, curative, and spiritual role of the folk healer, el curandero, in Mexican and Mexican/American communities, give a basic overview of our roots in Aztec medicine and medical philosophy, learn some commonly used herbs (including their traditional preparation and applications), and introduce culturally specific ailments and healing rituals of Mexico and the American south-west.

Fantastic meeting all of you! I was so impressed at the passion and breadth of knowledge Carla has on the subject of herbalism and traditional medicine as it was practiced in the southwestern US and Mexico. So many paths of learning have been lost, but many more are being retraced and expanded upon. Our cultural views on holistic healing and medical science seem to be shifting towards a realization that the two are not mutually exclusive. Traditional herbal treatments and rituals have been integral aspects of health (both for the individual as well as the community) for centuries. Modern medical research is finally coming around to realize its importance in our overall wellbeing. Thank you for sharing these important cultural traditions!

This will be a part of the Traditinon Healing clinical path and will hopefully have future dates which may be held on a weekend. If you can't make it, there will be plenty of clinical class options in the future. - Carla
