The 9-12 Project in Mentor, OH Making of America Reflections After the Seminar of October 16, 2010 This event exceeded all my expectations! Special thanks go out to Paul Prince for the creation of the Mentor 9-12 Project of Mentor for making this possibility. Hellriegel?s did a great job, Judge Pearce and the NCCS organization provided the nucleus of a great presentation, and the committee was great in putting it all together. The venue, Hellriegel?s, and service were superb. It is perhaps the greatest compliment to be able to say that this provider was largely unnoticed. Everything ?just happened? without any attention or fanfare; things simply became available as needed. Kudos to Hellriegel?s and staff for their support and service! Thanks so much to the committee to make it possible for the whole program go smoothly. Thanks to Nancy Doremus, Mike Cahill, Joan Lindhurst, and Richard Leech for their participation in setting up the program. So many things might have gone wrong; no great problems came up. They must have done their ?homework.? Last, but certainly not least, are the spectacular resources provided by the National Center for Constitutional Studies (http://www.nccs.net/ ). Our NCCS instructor for the day, Judge Lester Pearce, gave us the benefit of his own extensive personal experience as well as his knowledge of the constitution and constitutional issues, and provided an educational and entertaining assessment of the topic. Basically, he had the floor from 8:30am to 4:30pm, a rather extraordinary effort! And the sale of NCCS printed materials was unprecedented! This is an opportunity of getting this important information distributed quite a number of people hungry for this information. Finally, it is really inspiring to note that some members of the Hellriegel?s staff who could hear the Judge?s presentation were entertained and interested enough to ask about information on the Mentor 9-12 Project group. SOME CONCLUDING THOUGHTS AND QUESTIONS (POSSIBLE OUTREACH VENTURES?): Is it possible that this event may be a starting point for additional seminars or events in the future? This may be a time for brainstorming to, to over time, convey the eternal truth of the US Constitution and its virtues to more and more people. To foster more interest, we might tap into various groups, issues and/or venues. Some food for thought: 1. CONSTITUTION/CITIZENSHIP DAY IS MANDATED BY CONGRESS a. Legislation: Refer to Federal Register/V.70, No. 29/ Tues May 24, 2005/Notices: http://www2.ed.gov/legislation/FedRegister/other/2005-2/052405b.pdf i. This is a statutory requirement for the implementation of an educational program pertaining to the US constitution on Constitution Day, September 17. b. Some possibly good ideas, etc., may be found by visiting: http://www.nsu.edu/constitutionday/pdf/NASPAGuide.pdf and, http://www2.ed.gov/news/fedregister/index.html 2. The National Center for Constitutional Studies (http://www.nccs.net/ ) has a number of items available that might be worked into such a program. 3. VACATION LIBERTY SCHOOL - there may be some ideas here (http://www.attendvls.org/ ). 4. BETTER IN MENTOR DAYS are observed in Mentor about that time 5. LABOR DAY is celebrated on the first Monday in September. 6. SCOUTING ORGINANIZATIONS like Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts (Possible Merit Badges?) 7. Veterans groups ? are there others? 8. School political clubs, not necessarily limited to conservative. 9. College political clubs, not necessarily limited to conservative. 10. ----------------Any other ideas? Might it be possible to ?piggyback? on with any of these resources, observances, organizations, or others to foster the education and knowledge of the constitution? Thanks, and please give me your thoughts, Don Heuer
