You know the saying - use it or lose it!
This meetup is for those who value the citycycle network and want to see it stay. Brisbane's CityCycles give us the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful city in the way others do in the cities of countries like the Netherlands, Belgium and Slovenia. Meandering along on our treadlies stopping for a coffee, picnic, cheeky drink or visit to one of the latest art exhibition along the way.
To participate in the events of this group you'll need a CityCycle subscription, a helmet (or be prepared to chance getting one at the cycling station) and a desire to be a bit active and interactive with Brisbane and all that it has on offer. Some of our events may have us jumping on a ferry or train to reach a destination or return home but all will see us taking off from an area reachable by public transport and next to a CityCycle station (most likely inner city - New Farm, City, South Brisbane).
We'll do a combination of short (eg 1-2 hours) and long events (eg 5 hours) and you will be able to come for just the ride or participate in the other bits forming the whole event. Most will be on weekends but we may throw some in for after work. Ideas on rides/events from members welcomed - collectively we should come up with some fun things to do.
I've included below some info on obtaining CityCycle memberships, public liability insurance and tips when using the CityCycles.
This is not a meetup for anyone hoping to use it as a means to build fitness through riding - while we will be active the rides will be at a relaxed pace and on relatively flat paths (catering for the three gears on the CityCycles).
So, please join us.
Number limits on our rides:
We will need to limit the number of people who can join our rides because of the logistics of bikes available at our departure spot. Others are welcome to join us if the meetup is full but only if coming to us on a bike from a station other than our departure spot.
CityCycle subscription information:
You can obtain a casual or long term subscription.
The casual allows you to subscribe for a day or week through CityCycle.com.au (can be done up to 2 weeks before you want to use it). If using this option for a day subscription ($2.00) you must nominate the day you want to use it and the start time - if you don't it will default to start at the time and day you do the transaction. There is no limit to the number of daily subscriptions you can obtain, so you can do yours and a friend's if desired. You receive (at time of transaction and by email) a subscriber number and PIN number for each subscription you do. You'll need that info at the parking station terminal the day you want to use it (doesn't need to be printed out - just accessible to you).
The long term subscriptions can be obtained by either calling the CityCycle Hotline on 1300 229 253 (8:30-5:30 M-F) or visiting CityCycle.com.au. You can look at linking your CityCycle membership to your Gocard (but be aware that topping up your Gocard will not top up your CityCycle credit).
Public Liability Insurance:
Whichever subscription you go with, you may also like to consider getting public liability insurance through CityCycle or by joining Bicycle Queensland (07 3844 1144 or www.bq.org.au).
Tips for using CityCycle:
The free Allaboutbikes app helps you locate nearby CityCycle stations and details about them (number of bikes and parking that were available at the stations 30 mins ago).
If you arrive at a station with no parking available you can input your subscription details and you will be given details on the nearest station with parking available and a further 15 mins to get there without charge. You could generally get to the nearest station within a five minute ride.
