The Amsterdam Clojure Meetup presents: a Clojure Dojo

This time we will try a new format for the regular meetup: we will have a Clojure Dojo!

Here's how it works:

- A mission is stated at the beginning: we will have to develop something

- A pair of coders is chosen, which will work on the subject following the Pair Programming rules (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pair_programming), with their laptop attached to the projector

- The pair will have to openly discuss what they do, so that the audience can better follow their reasoning and their code

- The audience will have to silently observe, unless directly addressed by the pair

- After 10m, one coder will have to leave the pair, and  a new one will join

At the end, we will have a collective retrospective of the whole experience, so that we can focus on the interesting bits that we discovered along the journey. Clojure newbies are encouraged to join: there's no best way to learn clojure than to go ahead and code with it!

I added the pics I took while you were coding so hard, feel free to ping me if you don't want to be on the Internet™ :-)

Was great meeting you all. I'm on twitter ( twitter.com/logaan ) if you'd like to keep in touch. Look forward to seeing some of you again at Euro Clojure.

Here's the concurrency library we found worked quite well on the JVM. Gives you light weight threads for massive concurrency. Also supports actors and channels. https://github.com/puniverse/pulsar

He's my .vimrc setup for clojure. The plugins I use are listed with Bundle. https://gist.github.com/logaan/10372161

Paredit takes some time to get used to but will eventually become second nature and means you can stop stressing about parens.

vim-slime is what I use to send snippets of code to the repl using tmux (rather and using tmux copy/paste).

vim clojure static gives syntax highlighting and indentation.

Fireplace will let you connect to an nrepl session directly and eval code.

You can also make a small change to ctags to get it to index Clojure code.

Clojure Dojo was great and lots of fun! Was interesting to see the different tools people use, and different approaches to solve the problem. Organization was very well done :)

(For future reference) To enlarge the font in Light Table press 'ctrl-space', select 'Settings: User behaviors', in tab 'user.behaviors' find the :editor vector and insert (:lt.objs.style/font-settings "" 16 1) in the vector, save with 'ctrl-s' and voila; NICE BIG LETTERS

The Dojo format was a success: everybody got to program furiously for 90m, both clojure adepts and newbies worked together towards the goal. Looking forward to the next Dojo!

It was a really well organized meetup. I think it that was both accessible for newcomers and challenging for people already familiar with Clojure.

I really liked the Dojo format that was chosen for this edition of the meetup. Will certainly join again for that next time.
