Starting August 8, 2014, Lindy Blues & Groove is our monthly celebration of Lindy and Blues dancing. This event is an opportunity to experience Lindy and Blues dancing with some of Anchorage’s best dancers. If you are wondering about the dance itself, both Lindy and Blues originated and evolved from African rhythms and movements. Lindy started in places like the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem in the late 20s where battles of the band reigned with legends such as Fletcher Henderson and Count Basie. It embraces the joy of swing-era music and is often described as music that you simply can’t not dance to. Modern Blues dancing, meanwhile, weds the concepts of partner connection, improvisation and body movement to the deeply emotional blues music. Blues is not only a dance, it’s a way to experience blues music and all of the range of emotions it encompasses. In this monthly dance, we hope to expand the community by teaching new dancers the joy of social dancing while continuing to inspire experienced dancers. Lindy Blues & Groove will be the second Friday of each month. Beginner classes will be held from 7:30 to 8:30. Social dancing will start at 8:30 and continue until whenever. No partner needed and the classes will rotate so people will have a chance to dance with a wide variety of people. No street shoes please, because of the awesome floors - socks ok. $4 for the class and $4 for the dance.
