Re: [dance-654] Meetup details changed: Beyond Bascis/Intermediate Country Western 2-Step

We call it a "Boot Camp" because like the military, we drill the basics over and iver for the first hour because that is how you build muscle memory. The second hour is focused on at least two moves or figures until you are comfortable and the third hour is much of the same. At the end of three hours, you'll be tired but should have enough info to dance through a song or two...

Ms. Roxanne:

Sorry for the long email.

Thank you for taking the time to email me about this.   I "think" I have an ideal partner who too is seems to be a beginner, but who also seems to be mentally nimble-footed and culturally agile.

Yet on my part, in the greater world of popular dancing, the Argentine Tango is my interest.   Viewed from my perspective of Classical Chinese dancing and Classical Okinawan dancing, the tango is totally unique.

You say that you and Sr. Patrick know the Argentine Tango?   Do you have a studio, or other local where you meet for dancing?  I believe that my budding dancing partner might be ready to venture into the world of the tango.

To note:  I am a complete beginner.   I have only seen bits and pieces of the tango, and then, only once or twice.   My wife and I tried this once also.   The tango teacher, being actually from Argentina, started off assuming that we had seen the dance in its start-to-finish context.   I actually, never have.   So, with 20 years of experience teaching Japanese fencing at a Japanese university, starting off with "steps" that for me had no context, was absolutely hysterical.   "Is that the end bow, the middle, the start, the final finish?"  Lol.   Then he passed me off to another student who was from Germany, who was about 6'2", and my head was thus sort of stuck between "Heidelberg and Munich."   Not every American is suited for world travel.

Other non-Asian dances?

While in Texas I signed up for what is apparently called "The Texas Two Steps."   When I got there, the class was held in what do me looked like a barn that was used for repairing aircraft engines.   I stepped up to the plate, received my Texan-Dance-License plate, and waited in what were the most uncomfortable pair of foot wear even invented by man.   In Texas, they are called "boots," but I am sure that my Armenian ancestors were forced to wear them as a torture by the Turkish Army.

Then my partner whom I am assuming was assigned to me by the Govenor of Texas himself showed.  Up, she was from New Jersey, my other favorite state, and she was on a golf vacation.   Just for a case in point, let's sum up that experience up with the term, "Post Traumatic Texas Two Step Stress Disorder," or PT3SSD.

Point being, I am very, very interested and motivated to learn and progress in the art of the tango.  However, that is the only dance that I am amendable to.  I apologize if that seems stuffy.

I would really like to get started if you and Mr. Patrick would be inclined to teach.   The 3 Hour Boot Camp sounds fun, although unless there is a sing-along afterwards with Russian paratroopers, I am not so sure if a Dance Boot Camp is what I am looking for, unless it is, of course, a 3 hour tango camp, in which case, count me in.   I think I could progress fairly well with 3 hours of lessons.

There are no Tango Night Clubs in Anchorage. There is a group of people who practice weekly but it's in one of the members home and I am not sure if it is open to the general public. The owner of the Red Chair Cafe on 4th Ave will occassionally host a practice session after hours, we can keep you posted. Otherwise, Patrick and I know both Argentine and American Tango if you wish to learn. Perhaps we can start our own Tango group. I learned my Tango from Janice Faber who is now retired in Arizona but she does return to Alaska in the summers (at least for now) and teaches weekly at the Asia Garden when she's here...can keep you posted on this as well.

Also, we have a three hour boot camp scheduled Saturday 2/8th if you're interested.

Roxanne,

I perhaps have found someone who would like to learn to tango too.   Tango is the thing.

In town it seems that everybody wants to dance everything but the tango ...

Where can I learn that in town?

Tim

If you're interested in a beginner's waltz, if we can get a few more people for the class the perhaps Patrick and I can add waltz to our weekly lessons?
