Bake Cookies for Clean Air Challenge 2014

  • May 4, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is my 6th year riding the Clean Air Challenge but it is my first year of sitting on the committee. The event is in need of cookies for the rest-stops so I thought our group could help. I will post more details as we get a bit closer as to when & where the cookies need to be delivered. If people could sign-up to bake a few batches of cookies (chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal, etc.) that would be so helpful. This bike ride is a fundraiser for Alaska's chapter of the American Lung Association. The ride takes place May 10th and is a one-day event. Any leftover cookies will be donated to Bean's Cafe.

Link to Clean Air Challenge: http://action.lung.org/site/TR?fr_id=9201&pg=entry

Of course, if you would like to ride, please feel free to join me on Team Nunatak. http://action.lung.org/site/TR/Bike/ALAMP_Mountain_Pacific?team_id=81851&pg=team&fr_id=9201

There is nothing better than homemade cookies when riding a 100-mile bike ride for a great cause.

Just wanted to send a big huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this event. The cookies received positive feedback from riders. Homemade! And YUM! Thanks everyone for helping make the Clean Air Challenge a huge success. I think this was the best ride yet in my six years of riding it.

Don't forget to drop your cookies directly to ALA office tomorrow between 9-5:00. You can also drop off today during the same hours, or tomorrow a.m. before 11 a.m. as the truck is leaving for Talkeetna at noon on Friday. Sooner is better. Please let me know if you are unable to drop your cookies off.

Cookies can be dropped off directly with ALA on Thursday, May 8th: 500 W Intl Airport Rd #A, Anchorage, AK 99518. Or I can take them if dropping off at ALA isn't convenient.

I updated list above. made traditional choc chip with pecans, and another batch with oatmeal/raisin/pecan. Made peanut butter last week, but they just vaporized in the freezer. Really odd thing..... dunno how that happened.

I found this web site called Sally's Baking Addiction, and have made pumpkin , cranberry cookies, a peanut butter and chocolate cookie real cool looking and chocolate chip oatmeal, and a oatmeal cookie with chocolate covered raisin. Still plan on making brownies.

Just came from a CAC committee meeting and we will need to have all the cookies delivered to the American Lung Association office by Thursday, May 8th. If you are unable to bake cookies, please update your RSVP so others can bake additional.

  • Lani

I will bake Oatmeal cookies with nuts and m&ms.

    1 · March 30, 2014

  • Julie

Hey everyone....so, I hope you have started baking cookies...or at least thought about it. We are going to need 1,000 cookies. Start baking at your convenience. Please put cookies in 1-gallon zip lock bags (removing most of the air), label them with a marker, etc., then put in the freezer. We will need to deliver all the cookies to the CAC/Lung Association office week of the ride. Details on that to follow. Thanks for all your help!

    1 · March 18, 2014

  • Julie

Just an FYI...signing up for this doesn't mean you are physically attending an event. It means you are baking cookies to be dropped off at a later time. Details to follow on that later.

I will make chocolate chip oatmeal, nut cookies. I'll make a couple dozen. I might also join the race!

    February 8, 2014

  • Aurora

I will make Oatmeal Chocolate chip. Haw many do you need? I can do 3 to 4 dozen easy.

    February 6, 2014

    • Julie

I don't think we can have too many cookies! ;) So, whatever you can contribute is terrific.

      February 6, 2014

  • Julie

Quick suggestion....I would make the cookies on the smaller side. This will allow them to go further and the riders do not eat lot's of food while riding. They can always eat two cookies rather than throwing half of a cookie in the garbage. Oatmeal, nuts and chocolate are good energy sources for the long distance riders. The CAC is so excited that we are providing all the cookies, and homemade too. :)

    2 · February 5, 2014

    • Alaskan G.

I'll make 12 dozen cookies, healthy ones packed with protein and coconut flour.

      1 · February 5, 2014

  • Diane

I'm going to make brownies , who can say no to chocolate.

    February 5, 2014

  • Julie

So, we are going to need about 60 dozen or more cookies. :) The goal is to register 250 riders, then there are about 50 volunteers. Cookies will be out at all four rest-stops, in which three of the rest stops will be utilized for both directions of the ride.

    February 4, 2014

    • Laura

Ok, now that we have established the amount of cookies I'll personally be consuming, how many are we going to need for the hungry bike riders?? ~grin~

      February 4, 2014

  • Heidi

Hi I can bake cookies but probably won't drop them off on the 4th (my bday) but later in the week if that is ok with you.

    February 1, 2014

    • Julie

Cookies can be baked and frozen ahead of time. I'll let you know the time and place for drop off. Will be the week of the ride tho.

      February 4, 2014

  • Julie

I just made a black bean and butternut soup but used sweet potatoes instead of squash. This could be a good soup to make if the group takes charge of the fourth rest stop. Sweet potatoes are a bikers good friend. We have our next CAC committee meeting on the 22nd.

    1 · January 12, 2014

    • Laura

Sweet potatoes are a great carb and energy source!! Julie, are you aware of bikers who are grain free or dairy free and would appreciate something 'paleo' ?? ... "larabar" type snack? something fatty like bacon wrapped dates?

      January 12, 2014

    • Julie

My post was too long so emailed it to you.

      1 · January 12, 2014

  • Deborah G.

I will be happy to make cookies and soup or any other food needed. I will probably not be available the day of, won't know for sure until later.

    December 21, 2013

  • Diane

Will definitely make some cookies. Would also like to help out with the 4th stop but unsure at this time. Will let you know more when the event becomes closer.

    December 21, 2013

  • Julie

Cookies can be made ahead of time and frozen. Will post a delivery date and time for cookies but it will be the week of the 4th as the event is May 10th. Cookies should probably be put into 1-gallon zip lock bags and labeled with what type of cookie is inside. If they have nuts that might be good to note. Riders are everyday people like us and may be allergic to nuts, require gluten-free, etc.

    December 21, 2013

  • Laura

What a neat and fun opportunity to help a great cause!! I will gladly support and be a part of the 4th rest stop!! With the cooking skills we have, I think we could make for some GREAT healthy snacks for the riders. I've never done a lengthy biking event, but have done the Gold Nugget Triathlon, and it REALLY makes a huge difference when you have the good will of strangers just cheering you on. LET'S DO IT!!

    1 · December 21, 2013

    • Alaskan G.

I agree! Where is this rest stop? I will come if I can, depends on if hubs and I are doing anything for our anniversary that weekend :) But food, cookies, etc. I will gladly support and dish up!

      1 · December 21, 2013

    • Julie

The bike ride is May 10th, which is Mother's Day weekend (mother's day is Sunday). The 4th rest stop is at mile 135 of Parks Highway, a rest area at the start of Denali State Park. I will need to find out more info on the 4th rest stop thing and post it separate from the cookie posting.
