Ex Fabula – from the Latin for “from stories”
Our mission is to connect storytellers with live audiences on a regular basis. The ingredients have always been here—“Story. Stage. You.”—and Ex Fabula is bringing these elements together to create compelling events in which anyone can participate. Anyone, that is, who can tell a true, five-minute story on-theme and sans notes.
Each event will features stories from one or more of the following storytelling formats:
“The Solo.” Individual storytellers drawn at random from people who have signed up tell true, five minute stories without notes.
“The Duo.” Two storytellers take the stage together to tell a story about a shared experience. These stories are up to ten minutes total.
“The Rashomon.” In this format named after Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s classic that explores multiple perspectives, two storytellers will tell their versions of the same story. These stories are ten minutes total or 5 each for 2 storytellers.
“The Terkel.” A question and answer interview format. Think Studs Terkel in your living room coaxing vignettes from an everyman, if your living room was a stage at a bar and the everyman was your father.
Audience members will crown their favorite storyteller at the end of the night.
Storytellers will be randomly chosen from the audience volunteers at the beginning of the night, so if you think you can handle “The Solo”, come to one of our events prepared. Would-be storytellers should choose stories that tie in to the theme and practice without notes to the five minute time limit.
