    Just attended an excellent GDI Philly workshop on WP theme development taught by Tracy Levesque. Any chance of this meetup actually happening somewhere in Balto area?

      I could teach it, but I am about 1h30m away in Lancaster. If someone wants to host I could drive down I suppose. I teach this exact thing in my class at PCAD.

    Well, I just found a company, that allows me to make just a graphics home webpage in a .png, .jpg, .pdf, .ai or even a Photoshop .psd format and they implement their conversion process to turn it into a fully functional Wordpress theme.
    For $99. Turnaround time 3 days. www.wordpressintegration.com
    (Then all I have to do is study all the .php files showing what they did).

    I could teach this virtually if anyone is really interested. Maybe run a Google Hangout some day if possible.

    If the group is still looking for a location, I'm connected with the Baltimore City Robotics Center - and there's availability most evenings. Message me for more info - thanks!

    Is this just on hold until a location is secured?

    If anyone is in need of figuring out child themes/templates sooner rather than later I can offer my services of screencast/walkthrough on Google Hangout. I am a freelance designer/developer but also a teacher of many things WordPress related. Feel free to direct message me on here to set up an appointment time.

    The theme that I am currently working on building for myself is (correction from previous post)
    www.elegantthemes.com/preview/DeepFocus

  • Janis

    We could all go to www.elegantthemes.com and pick out a theme we liked, and work on making it ourselves, from scratch. See below post from me on resources to use.

    Okay, I just found this website on building your own Wordpress theme from scratch using a framework:
    http://themeshaper.com/2012/10/22/the-themeshaper-wordpress-theme-tutorial-2nd-edition/

    I also found this:
    https://learnable.com/books/build-your-own-wicked-wordpress-themes
    (and I can do a lot with a free trial)

    Maybe we could go through the 16 individual lessons of the first link above together. I see 32 people here are currently interested. The public library would have free meeting rooms.

    The theme that I am currently working on building for myself is www.elegantthemes.com/preview/DeepFocus

    (I love fancy gradients and deep focal length pics in a website!)

    This is a good idea, but seems vague...

    Are we referring to design elements? Designing a portfolio based theme has different elements than designing a hotel theme.

    Design tools such as; Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch, etc.?

    Or are we referring to designing a single page template?

    Or are we referring to coding/developing and not really designing?

      Zane, I am now studying code from .html files like www.elegantthemes.com/preview/DeepFocus and I want to make every picture on it easily changeable in the Wordpress Dashboard. I use extensive gradient shading to make a site fancy and also want to make those gradients easily changeable.

      I can teach these things. Once you get into writing functions and adding them to your own custom admin area it can be a breeze adding in your own customizations. There's a lot of set up work, but that can far outweigh the time involved in updating down the road.

    Do you know of anyone who teaches a wordpress class?

      I am teaching this fall at a local school in Lancaster. I also teach one on one via Google hangout.

    I think that this would be good 2-3 session series starting from basic HTML/CSS and moving to a basic WordPress template:

    * Home Page
    * Interior Page with Sidebar
    * Blog Listing / Archive + Sidebar
    * Single Post with Comments + Sidebar

    This is a decent 360 for a standard theme. Thoughts?

    I have looked through all the free templates of Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org. I also have looked at other sites such as templatemonster.com. What I want to do is take an existing single page template from one of those sites, and make every component of it (every single picture on it) easily changeable in the Wordpress Dashboard. Currently, only the header picture and the background picture are easily changeable in the dashboard as a Custom Header or Custom Background.
    I want to make widgets available in every piece (header, main content, side content, and footer).

    I'm not talking about using Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator, etc. to make the pictures themselves fancy.

    I'm talking about writing custom code (lots of CSS) including your own plug-ins to accomplish this customization (and also changing the functions.php file extensively) regardless of what kind of theme (portfolio, hotel, non-profit, creative, etc) you pick, and making the theme exactly what you want.

    Good deal, I'm working to see if we can host this at Betamore on Light St – more details soon, targeting first Monday of Dec, December 2.

    Sounds like your talking about customizing everything, like you said :D

    At that point you should look into the WordPress starter theme Underscores (https://github.com/Automattic/_s/). Or just start with your own blank file.
