Two Pyrenees rides, one Saturday and one Sunday morning, weekend ~Puigcerdà

  • Aug 9, 2013 · 5:00 PM

A couple of us plan to drive up to Puigcerdà (or somewhere in that region of the Pyrenees) on Friday evening August 9, do a ride on Saturday and another on Sunday morning.

The return on Sunday evening will be by train, at least for some of us, as one driver is staying on in the region afterwards. Trains take a bit less than three hours to return from Puigcerdà to Barcelona, with departures that Sunday evening from Puigcerdà available at 13:53, 17:11 and the last at 19:02. Tickets are €11,20/person/on-way.

The rides will be moderately long [masked]km), moderately hard (assume lots of climbing, but we haven't chosen the routes yet so whether it's just a lot of accumulated climbing, or some quite steep sections, I can't say yet), but (because I'll be there) speed won't be the principal objective.

We have room for one or two more. And of course if others wish to add a second car and more riders, they're welcome.

Lodging is as-yet undecided, though I'm leaning towards inexpensive hotels. **Each person will be responsible for his/her own lodging decision**.  I will not be acting as a full coordinator for everything on this particular outing.

Please contact me if you're interested, and I'll fill you in as I decide the details.

-Jay

I was really happy to get to see the Pyrenees — beautiful mountains and roads. I'm sorry I didn't catch up with you again up Port d'Envalira after Vallnord, it probably would have been easier if you hadn't been in a taxi. ;) Here is my Strava: http://www.strava.com/activities/73923160

Thanks again for a great weekend!

To be completely fair to Sam, she got to the port completely under her own power, and before both of us :-)
(Yes, I did use a taxi to get me up from Soldeu; sigh).
But, Nils, you did all that extra distance and elevation up towards Vallnord and THEN started back up Envalira! As far as I'm concerned, you passed me way back down in Andorra. :-)

Well, we had some complications, but on the whole it was a great weekend :-)

On Saturday, Nils brought in 180km and over 4000m of climbing; Sam 150km and over 3000m, and I did 140km and 2600m. We had some excitement/ worry as we all got separated a couple of times, for which I take the blame in two ways: one, that I encouraged Nils to go up Vallnord while Sam & I started the long climb back to the port d'Envalira, and two: that I over-estimated my own capability, and ran out of steam on the last 400m up Envalira the second time. But everybody got home, and although tired I think I saw a lot of satisfaction!

Sunday, by contrast, was great! Of course we were sore and tired from the day before, but the route was really beautiful, we had great weather, we all stayed together, and we even got invited into the town of Railleu's summer festival for pizza, quiche and drinks as we bicycled past :-)

Photos forthcoming from Sam & Nils, I hope, as I didn't take any...

Hi nils I just had a look at the place you suggested and it looks like the price has gone up. Would you be interested in camping ?? I'm on a tight budget.....

Do you have what's app and a phone number or email address I can message you on ?

    • Nils

I think we got most things sorted out now (over phone). Jay, do you want to meet in Barcelona before we go to the other train station?

Would you guys be willing to split a room in a cheap hotel for the weekend? If it's only four of us maybe we can even find one that is big enough for everyone?

Hi Nils, I have already booked a room, but if you can find something cheap I could see if I could cancel it.

Hi Nils, I am happy to share a room with a group of us. There's definitely places that are 50 for the weekend if we share with 3 or more but I am away at the moment so can't get on the net to have a good look. Cheers

Hi Jay, I don't have a car but would love to join. Is there some room?

    Cheers,

Hi Nils. At present we don't have car space, but the train works fine for this. Rodalies line R3 continuing on past Vic goes all the way to Puigcerdà.

About lodging, each person is responsible for their own lodging choices and reservations.

    Hi Michel,

I would be interested, but unfortunately I don't drive so I can't help with the driving, also what is the situation with accommodation?

    Thanks,

    John.

    July 14, 2013

    • Jay L.

Hi John. It's Jay this time, actually, not Michel.
At present we have one or two spaces free in a car; cost sharing of gas, tolls, etc of course.
Accomodation we haven't chosen yet. Something between moderately luxurious camping and a basic hotel, although realistically I am not going to get in the middle of that - each participant may choose his/her own, and coordinate with each other as they see fit.

Hi Jay, ya that is fine, I definatly want to take part, cheers
