Be homeless for a night in Trowbridge

  • March 1, 2013 · 11:00 PM

To raise money for a local charity and to raise awareness of homelessness which is something I feel strong about as it could happen to anyone if their circumstances change, I am going to sleep rough  on the night of Friday 1st March. If  anyone would like to join me to raise money. there is a £25 minimum sponsorship for each person. The event starts at 10pm/11pm and finishes at 7am the next morning, so would suggest if anyone is interested, meeting up for a warming meal during the evening beforehand (and a few large whisky`s to keep me warm for the night!)tin local pub/restaurant. Warm sleeping bags a must!!!!and i guess i should invest in some thermals!!!! If anyone is interested in sponsoring me that would be brilliant, thank you.

I went along to the Bath Food bank yesterday. What of the suggestion to do some volunteering there?

Yes Tim. Sounds good :) Although Gary and his girlfriend did it Christmas Day and they said everybody was rude to them and they wished that they hadn't bothered! Weird, when you're doing a charitable thing eh!

so pleased we did this. Becky and Claire were great company.
Spent a very cold night giggling with Becky at some one who snorred like a lion LOL. Thank you so much to every one who sponsered us and to Paul and Lisa who phoned us, it was so thoughtful. It made all the difference as at that point I was feeling so cold and a little sorry for myself. Thank you also for all the texts and kind wishes. Luciex

We made it through the night, albeit a very cold one & a noisy one with lots of background snoring (not from us 3 I hasten to add) so not alot of sleep was had! It was a very rewarding event & I have made a few prominent links which will lead me on to further work from this which is great. We were well looked after by the St Johns Ambulance crew who did regular rounds to check we were all still breathing, or had been eaten by an animal of the night. I would thank to thank you all so much once again for your kind donations, between us we have made about £500 but still counting & waiting for a few monies from people so the figure could be more. Thank you Tim, for the loan of your bits, the foam was particulary useful and thank you Paul (Elliott) for ringing me last night just before midnight to wish us all luck and offer your support, it was a very thoughtful thing to do and was greatly appreciated by all three of us. Thank you once again, and have a great weekend one and all :-)

At the Italian evening the banta for the event was uplifting, discussion of a cardboard gazebo and a disco.
Praise to the 3 of you in being successful in the challenge and raising so much money.

Claire i have all the stuff tim gave me in my car. Not been through it though will look for the flask and fill it with boiling water. The rest we can share out. Oh! Will put lots of garlic in tomatoe and lentil soup.

    • claire

Cool. I've got two small Thermos for hot water, but will fill them up in the pub and save the hot water for in the middle of the night when it's gotten cold. Fill it up with whatever you want :) Glad you got some sponsors, sounds like they need all the help they can get. Shame there is only 12 people doing it!

I was going to bring some hot water in a thermos for a hot water bottle, but don't have a thermos :( Soup would be good too. I wonder how long they will serve soup for.

      February 27, 2013

    • Katrina B.

You can often buy a thermos flask in charity shops. Hope you manage to keep warm - think warm thoughts!

      February 28, 2013

  • Tim H.

Amongst the other items I am bringing to the Italian night for the Homeless challenge is a walkers thermos designed for soups. A hand warmer that runs off charcoal bricks. Just take what you want.

Boring it is to say, Alcohol is not a good idea for a night sleeping rough. As Claire says it thins the blood.

Becky, I will have an attempt with your charity web site for sponsor money. If I fail at the 1st hurdle I will give you a donation tomorrow night.

Of course becky happy to have what ever you need me to take for you in my car. My worry is you though becky. You need to be 100% well to do this hun. I am trying to get us some big cardboard boxes we can get into. They will act as a wind break if we get inside them. If you want to bring some stuff tomorrow evening i can take that as well.

Does this mean we are going to be treated to a fashion cat walk for homeless people. The microphone fashion commentary along the lines of, the au couture line of what Claire has done with newspaper.
Sell tickets for the event as a fund raiser.
Stella McCartney did the out fits for the Olympics, which celebrity fashion designer did you get for your event?

I don't have a winter sleeping bag, but I do have a big block of foam with and insulate layer to separate you from the ground. I will bring what I have, include clothing to the Italian Night Thurs. Take away what you want.

    February 22, 2013

    • claire

Hi Tim, thanks for the offer. The foam sounds good. Is it big enough for three bums! Pardon the pun!

      February 23, 2013

    • claire

Got one now, thanks hon! We'll be alright. It is afterall putting ourselves in the position that homeless deal with all the time. We have to suffer!

      February 23, 2013

  • lucie g

    hi 'claire

A true homeless person would give superior tips but here goes. If you wear fewer cloths inside your sleeping bag you will be warmer as the body generates the heat inside the bag. Wear a hat to keep warm, or is that just people with no hair!!!! Insulation between the ground and the sleeping bag stops the heat from the bag heating up the ground and the bag loosing heat. Newspaper has some many properties other than to read.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
