IT Therapy Meetup

Since IT issues tend to drive many people insane at some point, it is good to know that those precious lost photos may be recoverable, or that your fiddly WiFi could reach the jacuzzi in the back garden. Fortunately the answers to many of these issues are free, and Mr IT out there will often charge a fortune for it.

I will be offering free workshops to give advice on IT's most wanted problems at home, but first I'd like to see the level of interest. It is likely I'd run these as a social event and so I'll be doing some research where best to do this and when, with preference being Bath or Bradford on Avon.

I would like to do these as Q&A sessions so I am addressing real issues from people. It might lead to a Radio 4 slot :-)

Just what I needed. My laptop is getting slower every time I use it. Need some advice before taking it to the IT doctor.

.. pls only use CDs if confident with them.

Hi Deedee, It was good to meet you, I'm happy to meet you in Bradford with your laptop to have a look at the problem you are having, let me know what the best day / time would be, Andrew

So why does my wifi stop working when a plane flies over? (BS6) I like the idea of this meetup... being social and having some humour and entertainment value too?

    March 17, 2013

    • Phil

...and thanks. Appreciate the help and the Virgin advertising ;-) Phil

If BT Biz hub, get on the horn to them re yr service issues. Be most displeased & challenge their service not meeting contract... key phrase "not as advertised" or "not fit for purpose".. get refund or free upgrade.. Good Luck.

Sorry, I don't think I'll b able to make it to this session, hope it'll b easier to attend one in Bristol if it's organised. Thanks anyway and have a good one :-)

    April 7, 2013

  • Mike

Thanks - lots of good advice here, though I cannot attend the meet now.

    April 7, 2013

  • Louisa

I've lost track slightly of how whether we're supposed to let you know our problems before the session or not, so just in case here's mine: mysterious & teeth-grindingly annoying inability to cut and paste links to websites into excel and word. I've done a bit of googling to try and find a solution, but to no avail.

    April 6, 2013

    • Chris S.

That's a curious one. Can you describe what *does* happen when you've tried? Do you mean the links don't "stay as links" (easy fix), or "nothing pastes" or "gobbledygook" pastes instead? (needs further diagnosis)

      April 6, 2013

    • Louise

Have you tried using http://www.websitenam... format rather than just www? Sometimes that's more successful for creating links, including in body of emails.

    Had a bad day ........!

Sorry I'm going to have to cry off this one as I spent a lot of time goofing off in the sun yesterday and need to catch up with some work today :-( Can I suggest that the next session has a theme? For example Virus's a great mystery and cause of huge anxiety to me.

I'm not coming but can I ask a question? I want to take a youtube vid and use it as part of an online lesson. How and indeed, can I embed(?) it into another place?

Adobe flash plugin has crashed. I keep reloading with no fix. Computer memory running low - advice req.. please- DELL Vostro laptop running Windows 7

    April 3, 2013

    • Tim H.

Hi Paul, You are not going to like what I say. I have had problems recently with Adobe Products. I run Windows 7 and I use Google Chrome, which I prefer as a browser.
Do you remove the Adobe plugins by using the correct UnInstall program?
I just repeatedly removed the Adobe with the correct UnInstall and reInstall each time with a fresh download just in case it got corrupted during the download install process. Frustrating I know, but that is IT for you

      April 4, 2013

    • Chris S.

Chrome uses a "built in" Flash driver.. there's a way to "disable" it so a "proper one" downloaded from Adobe can be installed on the system and will become default.. Did it a while back.. will search to see if much has changed since...

      April 5, 2013

In theory I'd like to come but it depends when/where it is as Bath is tricky for me and Bradford-on-Avon off my grid!

    March 17, 2013

    • Chris S.

Katrina & Kate, are either of you familiar with the Northey Arms, between Bath & Box, along the A4? "Nearer" than going to B-o-A...

      April 2, 2013

    • Chris S.

Sorry.. silly me. You're coming from Bristol way. At/near Keynsham roundabout is The Globe... not close for me, but if someone's happy to try it...?

      April 4, 2013

  • Moira G.

Hi-I'm based in Bristol but would love to come- old laptop overheating is my main concern at the moment-but plenty I could learn

    March 18, 2013

    • Chris S.

May I humbly suggest a "laptop cooling fan"..? There are a few types - mainly a flat unit, often as a riser, with fans built-in, sometimes a useful USB multi-port.. You can see examples at your nearest Maplin. . . . . . For more serious overheating, check the heat sink (from which the fan blows out the hot air) - if it looks clogged with dust bunnies, try a vacuum cleaner with the "edge" nozzle attachment.. but make sure the laptop is off first. :-)

      April 2, 2013

    • Chris S.

Other thing you can do is try *not* to run too many processor-intensive programs at the same time. MS Office *anything*, for example, *esp* Outlook if your mailbox is Huge. Video players (Intensive graphics processing), esp at "full-screen" size - you might get away with "windowed". . . . . . Otherwise, what software DO you use on your old laptop? :)

Sunday evening would be impossible for me but if that suits most people then will happily remain in IT ignorance.
One question would be - how to use facebook safely - I am on facebook but too frightened to use it much as anxious re privacy, uncertain re downloading photos etc! feel I must learn about it and start to use it as falling behind with contact with friends who use it all the time - help!!!

    March 18, 2013

Upper Right icons.. explore "Security" and "Privacy" settings so you have a little "background" before the MeetUp. ;)

Hi I would be intersted in your IT workshop/s. BOA would be best for me. Great idea!

    March 17, 2013

    • Chris S.

Hi Helen, can you recommend a venue in BoA which might cater to a group like ours AND which has ample parking (nearby)? Thanks!

      April 2, 2013

  • Amanda C

sounds a great idea, Bradford on Avon good for me :)

    March 17, 2013

    • Chris S.

Hi Amanda, is there any particular place you might recommend in BoA where they'd have space for, and would welcome, a group bearing laptops..? ..one with enough convenient parking nearby? :)

      April 2, 2013

  • Liz

Would have liked to come along but can't do Bath

    April 2, 2013

  • Liz

On a weekend in B-o-A would be good for me.

    March 17, 2013

    • Chris S.

Hi Liz, recommend any particular place which may be willing to have a bunch if drinkers plugging in laptops etc? .. and with enough *parking* on-site or very conveniently nearby? ;)

      April 2, 2013

  • Andrea C.

Definitely interested. Depends when-I'm a total numpty with anything remotely ITish-will that be a problem-And I thought all IT people did was swithch off and switch on again?

    March 17, 2013

    • Chris S.

WiFi router "issues" can *mostly* be solved with power off/on.. but other issues need "diagnosing" like a Doctor would a patient. ;) . . . . . Even "IT numpties" can learn some useful, easy things to help with productivity and basic system maintenance. All is not lost! :D

Hi Chris I know they have a separate room that can sometimes be booked but not sure it that would be suitable but just a thought.

    1 · April 1, 2013

    • Chris S.

Yes, that room is upstairs, is a good size, and ought to have a few power points.. but I'd wager they'd charge room hire for it... (at least the other loos are just round the corner) ;]

      April 2, 2013

  • Mike

Thanks for doing this Chris. I'll be interested in the answer to Deedee's question, and also want to know what firewalls etc I would need in order to feel confident about entering credit card details over the internet to buy stuff.

    April 1, 2013

    • Chris S.

Re ZoneAlarm - I'd recommend it, but don't get the antivirus trial with it.. I find it (the AV) quite the memory (RAM) hog... :( . . . . . ZA Personal Firewall is excellent. See also GRC.com - Gibson Research - Steve Gibson is a well-known (US) IT Security guy. He was one of the very first to recommend ZA when it was new years ago. I love it!

Hi, I'd defo be interested. I'm rather tech savvy already, but sure I can stand to learn MUCH more. (I've been told by an IT pro that he thinks I explain things "in layman's terms" better than he can!)

Hi Chris - what a great idea and very generous of you.I live in Bristol so may not make all meets, but I think that it is a fab idea.

    March 18, 2013

    • Sasha

Cheers Chris! I like the skills trading concepts where people barter their skills and everyone's time is equally valuable, and people can afford to access services they may otherwise not be able to. With the community spirit in meetup, your meetup masons might very well be possible! Good luck to you and Tim.

Initially I thought it would be like the Antique's road show, but I wouldn't be able to say what they had was worth £1 million pounds.

If people would like to send me emails gives me an idea what concerns they have regards their Tech

Would definitely be interested. How to back up. How to down load photos. How to stop hearing about the antics of my nephews on facebook and many more.

I love the idea of an IT session, just got my first ever smartphone. It turns out it seems to be smarter than I thought, smarter than myself anyway :-P Saturdays are best for me as well. Weekdays tricky. Bristol or Bath are fine (can take the train to Bath) B on Avon difficult unless I get a lift (happy to share petrol costs). Txs!
