Stanley Kubrick's 2001 a Space odyssey talk and screening (Free event)

Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey is an influential and enigmatic cinematic masterpiece. Bristol's new professor of history of art, Simon Shaw-Miller introduces a full showing of this epic, symphonic film. His talk will propose fresh readings, relating 2001 to Richard Wagner and American minimalism, among others.

Possibility of drinks/food before or after if anyone’s interested.  Meet on the steps outside the Victoria rooms (Behind the fountains) between 5.45pm and 5.55pm

You need a ticket for this event which is free.  Ticket link here: http://insidearts-2001.eventbrite.co.uk/

Nice evening, thanks for arranging James

My seat was ok if not as futuristic as those on screen. But why haven't they invented floating pens yet?

My bum still has not recovered from the 28hour flight in cattle class from Oz on Sunday, these seats just finished it off!
The film is still amazing, no I was not checking out the VPL!
I had forgotten how indulgent Kubrick was, 3 minutes of music on a black screen!

Worth it for the music alone, I could listen to Strauss all day, the seats I found to be ok, and I have sat on some very bad ones! this film was way before it's time, and I noticed the vpl on the lady crew member (shame on you Hardy Amies), that would never happen these days.....very good film, I could see why the Art Director loved it, it passed me by in 1978, and also the men looked good too!! Great free evening.

Thanks to all who came it was a good chance to see the film on the big screen. The screen size and sound quality was good the talk at the start was informative enough. Honest feedback! Whoever bought those chairs (They are fairly new) Never sat in them for an hour before buying. Most uncomfortable things Ive sat in in a long time to small and with a 6 inch arm rest? That was as hard as nails. I would go for another standard length film but not for one of the length of 2001. Bar didnt have any cider :/ and they got my order wrong twice. Hence Ive given the film ***** and the Vic rooms ***. Again thanks to all who came :) Those who did not attend be aware of the new No show policy (Check your emails) on this occasion I did not take a list but this was a ticketed event and in the future you could have a no show put on your meetup profile. Thanks all :) James

Oh no! Cider would have made the chair a little more tolerable :(

Mm, hadn't taken the talk into account. Maybe I'll just bring a sandwich as I won't be able to get there early enough to eat before.

Only problem I can see is its a long film. Depends how long the talk before is as to what time we get out.
