Make Sweet Music - Jam

Calling all Musicians.
Got an acoustic instrument?
Sing a bit?

Bring your instrument and/or voice along to St James Wine Vaults - buy a drink and come down to the Cellar. We have exclusive use of the Cellar to have some fun, play in front of others, be creative and learn a bit.

There is a total charge of £10 for the electrics - so it's practically free for our use (the pub will obviously expect us to have a few drinks to make it worth their while).

That's great, Richard! The bass ukelele sounds very Beach Boys Pet Sounds. Cool!

Yeah, Ive got an old acoustic, I'll bring that down. Actually there's a bass ukulele for sale locally on gumtree. Looks cool. 4 band eq preamp. Apparently the tone sits between upright and electric bass. Might check it out. A quirky thing to play onstage. But I also want a Steinberger headless from the 80s. Remember those?

Hi Steve, Richard, Don and Dan. Really looking forward to meeting you all tomorrow evening. I am sure it will be a lot of fun. I have one of my songs called Space for Grace that i would like us to try. It is very simple...F major 7, G major 7 , C major 7 and E major. Would you be able to bring an acoustic guitar and play basslines on that..4 guitars would be cool..Boston, Eagles, America, CSNY

Unfortunately gentlemen, I'm still without a bass amp. Wish I'd hung onto that Fender Rumble now. Anyway, it's unlikely I'm going to get one airlifted to my door by tomorrow night, so I probably won't be playing but I'll certainly drop by to say hello. So it's down to a four piece without a bass -The Doors! Minus the keyboards, obviously.

Well, I reckon an un-amplified electric bass will still be ok for practicing.

Ok, only five of us, but hey ho that's probably a good number to launch the first Jam. I've no plans for how this will work, and I'm not taking ownership of any musical direction - so it will be relaxed, fun and let's see what happens. I suggest if anyone has a song they would love to sing then please give it a go; I've only ever played and sung in front of 5 people (once) and that was last week!! Likewise, if there's a song that you'd love to sing "with" others, then bring some copies of lyrics/chords/tabs, or just hold an impromptu lesson!

3 guitarists, one bass player and a drummer - Boston!

See you there, I'll be in the bar buying a beer at 7, then straight down to the cellar.

Great idea, really looking forward to this! My experience is fairly limited, as is my repertoire (guitar and vocals), but this looks like a fun way to get into playing with and in front of people...!

Fantastic, Steve, well done! Let us make a beautiful sound between us and take the music world by storm! Maybe we can think of a band name? Off the top of my head...GROOVY GRAVY!

    November 1

    • Steve Garrett

Well we could have Teem which is "meet" up: teem jazz, teem folk, teem blues, teem rock etc.. or, BraBaMuBa (Bristol and Bath Meetup Band) it's got a ring to it - brabamuba :-) Anything you like!

Steve, what's the backline at the Vaults? Do I need to bring a bass amp? I notice you've said 'acoustic' instruments.

    November 1

    • Steve Garrett

Hi Richard - if we want to use their back line in the future, we'll need an engineer. But the sound-proofing is ok if you want to bring your own practice amp. At some point, when we know how many electric people there are, we'll try out The Factory Studios - the whole caboodle is inclusive and it's less than £10/hour. 4 hours, 10 people, £4 each and tea/coffee is free all night; got to be a bargain!
