Make Sweet Music - Jam

Calling all Musicians.
Got an acoustic instrument?
Sing a bit?

Bring your instrument and/or voice along to The Nova Scotia Hotel - buy a drink and come on upstairs. We have exclusive use of the Function Room to have some fun, play in front of others, be creative and learn a bit.

It's totally free for our exclusive use (the pub will obviously expect us to have a few drinks to make it worth their while).

You may also be interested in another Jam in Bath 11th December at St James Wine Vaults - http://www.meetup.com/The-Bath-Everything-Meetup-Group/events/152033122/

The first meet-up Jam (in Bath) went really well.  Just four of us, but we had a good time and played a few songs.

I recommend, that if you want to play something and wish others to join in then bring a few copies of the lyrics/chords.  Maybe even post a few ideas on this page, so others can prepare if they wish.  Otherwise, let's just see what can happen on the night.

    Hi Everyone! Please listen to this beautiful and harmonious song on You Tube...From There To Back Again by The Beach Boys! I reckon in time with all our voices we could produce a beautiful harmony sound like that!

      Ive just listened to the Italian song. Yes it is really lovely and amazing singing...so high! Great cosmic video too! I reckon we could do it with the band! I will try singing those high notes! Hopefully see you at the next meet up on the 11th in Bath!

    Hi Everyone! I am liking all the positive vibes from everyone last nite! Having the April gig to aim for is brilliant, Steve. It gives us a real focus! I am sure we will eventually end up at the 02, Angela! I agree with you that with the onset of Winter it would nice to sing happy songs..how about Groovin' by the Young Rascals? I really enjoy working out and constucting vocal harmony arrangements but only in a gentle and encouraging way. I can hear that we all have some really nice voices. Instrumentally it was really working well too with the 3 guitars, mandolin and saxophone. We also have bass and drums to add to that next time. Steve, i am happy to share the load with you regarding printing up copies of lyrics for everyone. Which ones would you like me to print up? It would be great if everyone made a suggestion for the bandname...i have Groovy Gravy! Kind of 60s sound! Russ

    Thanks for coming everyone; some nice sounds happening there, and can only gets better. Thanks also for Don and Rosie for popping in too. Sorry for rushing off, but it was a quick march back to Temple Meads for the last train. It seems the songs we liked were:
    * Peaceful Easy Feeling - Eagles
    * Horse with no name - America
    * Ain't no sunshine - Bill Withers
    * Wouldn't it be nice - Beach Boys
    * Hey there Delilah - Plain white T's
    * Brown-eyed Girl - Van the man
    * Atlantic City - Bruce
    * So happy together - Turtles So, look at whichever songs you fancy singing/playing, and any others, and we probably need more copies of lyrics next time (must buy some paper for my printer!!). And, next time Linda will bring her guitar and Nitin his bongos :-) Keep your eyes peeled for next date.

      Great evening everyone! Such great potential and yes it will get better! I totally agree with you Steve..that is a lovely set of 8 songs to work on. We had some wonderful harmonies happening on Horse with no name. That is song is perfect for building harm

      November 29, 2013

    • Russ P.

      That song is perfect for building up layers of harmonies and everybody knows it. I would like to add 2 of my songs to the list...Space For Grace (which i played) and Flowers In A Warm Wind. We seem to have 10 singers which is great for some amazing harmonies but it would be nice if the lead vocals were shared round equally too!

    More of a sing-along than what I think of as a jam! (That's not a criticism, just an observation!)

    Oops, just realised it's 7, not 7.30! See you as soon as I can!!

  • Cristina

    Hi! My proposal is Hey there Delilah by Plain White T's, I guess it's quite easy to play...
    I'll bring the lyrics :)

    I've taken the bait - how about Cantaloupe Island? It's got a very clear tune, bass riff and structure - should be able to play by ear & hard to get lost. Perhaps the chords are too tricky? But you can solo over it with a blues scale, so accessible, I hope. In a sense, it's as hard as you want it to be.

    Try these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXuxz5-wSaY&list=PLBFE654E446142511 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZEtoVNpPDo

    The chords are:
    Fm7 x4 (F blues/dorian)
    Dbm7 x4 (F blues/Db mixolydian/Ab melodic minor/Ab blues)
    Dm7 x4 (D blues/dorian)
    Fm7 x4 (F blues/dorian)
    ... or F blues throughout is ok too

    Actually, I've never played this song, just taking the opportunity to suggest one I've wanted to have a go at for a while.

    • Steve G.

      My stubby fingers can't cope with some of those chords - maybe we can find a simply version tomorrow. Do we have any improvising soloists?

      November 27, 2013

    • Ben

      Hehehe, if it's not realistic, give it a miss, no stress. Can you jam without improvising? ;)

      November 27, 2013

  • Steve G.

    If anyone has a burning desire to play/sing a particular song, then post it here, perhaps with a youtube link, and we can get a sneak preview and maybe check out the chords etc

    e.g. I've been looking at "ain't no sunshine" Bill Withers. There are many ways to play it - here's Marty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d51CDXgxGDM or, it works well with just Am, Em, G open chords. There's even a lead riff somewhere on youtube, but can't find the link anymore! Lots of scope for singers with this one.

      Great idea! Even if people just bring along something with an mp3 in it, it gives us ideas to start from.

    Hi Steve. Looking forward to Thursday! Last week was great! 12 people should make a beautiful sound! I would like to try some if my songs again. The same ones. Aint no sunshine will be great! Russ

    Hi! I love singing but I don't know anything about music, I just enjoy singing! May I join the group? Thank you!

    November 25, 2013

    • Steve G.

      Of course you can Cristina - who knows, you could be the next Shirley Bassey! Anything can happen from this group - perhaps several singers will want to go off and form a small choir? Others may want to outperform Lady Gaga, and others be happy to provide back-up as the Meet-up-ettes :-) See you on Thursday.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
