A Night at the Flicks: Philomena

Judi Dench and Steve Coogan play unlikely friends in PHILOMENA, the moving, funny and at times shocking true story of one woman's search for a lost son. Falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena was sent to the convent of Roscrea to be looked after as a "fallen woman". When her baby was only a toddler, he was taken away by the nuns for adoption in America. Philomena spent the next fifty years searching for him but with no success. Then she met Martin Sixsmith, a world-weary political journalist who happened to be intrigued by her story. Together they set off to America on a journey that would not only reveal the extraordinary story of Philomena's son, but also create an unexpectedly close bond between Philomena and Martin. The film is a compelling narrative of human love and loss that ultimately celebrates life, showing that there is laughter even in the darkest places.

Hey everyone... if you haven't seen it, look out for the film 'Oranges & Sunshine' on Weds 11 Dec at 11.35pm, BBC1. Watch it and weep. It should never have happened in our lifetime.

Excellent film, marred only by the constant sniffling and wailing from Laurence.

Yeah, actually 'it is a fair cop' I lied about the sleeve thing and it was so bad that I had to use the left sleeve as well---however, it was also a major stroke of luck that I was wearing Waynes jacket!!!!

Note venue for this is NOT Cabot. Wayne nearly managed to shake me off there ---but luckily I had my eyes peeled!!!!!

PS. Is 'hankie' another name for sleeve??

  • Ruth

I have already seen this brilliant film, but do get your hankies at the ready as it is rather heart wrenching
