Let's meet up and play our ukuleles!

I bought a ukulele (and a book) a while ago and learned some chords, but .... it would be much more fun learning in a group and making some ukulele friends! Are there any uke players, inexperienced or experienced, who'd like to get together now and then?

Ukes are such fun. I know the Bristol Ukulele Jam, and the Bristol Ukulele Club, but didn't know about yours. You might be interested to see what can be done with a uke - have a look at www.ukulelefunhouseorchestra.co.uk
where there are some videos of the early days with 3 of us and now when there are 14. I'm the MD. I'd like to come to the next get-together if I can.
In the meantime, we're playing at the Newman Hall Henleaze on the 6 june, next Saturday, so come along. Lots of humour and good songs...this is a teach yack for a song we will be doing to give you an idea of the whole thing.

I hope your group is a rest success, and I hope I can get to the next meeting.

.... into a proper learning thing. We work through songs off sheet music, presently focusing on picking out a melody (rather than strumming, which most of us have had an untaught go at before coming). We're learning how to read music off the treble clef too so we don't have to rely on tabs. You can come if you like but it's real elementary stuff. When we've got a bit further we can more fruitfully join forces. We only meet every now and then, not regularly enough really. But we enjoy it!

Hi Janet, not a music reader myself beyond an elementary stage. It sounds like you'll be making a good sound, so let me know when you're happy with it and then I can come along.

    Hi Marta. Welcome to bristol!
Tomorrow is the first meetup in bristol for learning and playing ukuleles, so it's ukes only I'm afraid. There is another group for any instrument - you'll see the notices.
    Your English is very good!

    Hi!,
We are Antonio and Marta, a spanish couple who has recently moved to Bristol. We have just see this event and wonder if we could go. We do not have any instruments but Antonio plays guitar very well (although he says no) and me... well, I love music and I can manage with simples rhythms :). We would be happy just going and listen, perhaps we can give some ideas. But we can understand if it is out of place ;) (I have to apologize if my English is not too correct, as I said, we have just move here)

    Rob,

I'm a musician and for me the joy is in the learning-especially together with some great people- would you not reconsider?I'm sure you would have a lot to teach me.

    March 19, 2014

    • Janet d.

Well said Trevor. (I hope Rob is still receiving these comments despite changing the rsvp

Sorry Janet - as a musician I just can't cope with being so bad at an instrument so I'm afraid I won't be coming - it's one of my character defects. Apologies. Have a great time!

Hi Yoshi. There's a shop at the bottom of Park Street that sells a range of ukuleles if you plan to buy one, but I'll have one spare one on Saturday.

      March 17, 2014

  • Janet d.

Hi Trevor, we'll be at my house in Staple Hill (details to follow nearer the time). As to what sort of music, let's just see who is interested in what. People can bring suggestions - we'll all be feeling our way at first!

    March 8, 2014

Hi Trevor, looking forward to Saturday. It would be great if you could bring a couple of songs - really simple ones! - that we could all try out together. I've got a couple too.

    Hi Everyone.

I used to play the piano, a long time ago, and meant to start learning something else. Ukulele sounds fun but I do not have one. Does anybody have a spare I can borrow? Or anybody can suggest me where can I get one? I live in the centre of Bristol. Thank you

Janet what date is this taking place and where? Could be interested.

    March 7, 2014

I studied GCSE music and play the piano to grade 5. Also play the recorder at school. Do we need to read music or do we use cords? My mum/dad have a ukulele.

Oh, not a great start-I should have said:

What sort of music are you interested in playing?

Also, does anyone have an idea of the venue for the group?

    Cheers,
