A walk up the River Frome from Fishponds to Bury Hill Fort via Frenchay Common and Moor, returning via the Frome to Oldbury Court.
By the end of the walk we will all be looking forward to some good wholesome pub grub at the Optional pub lunch at the Wetherspoon’s The Vandyke Arms in Fishponds High Street.
‘Bury Hill Fort is an ancient Celtic fort built about 700 BC. The double earth ramparts are well preserved except on the western side where they were destroyed by quarrying, along with a Roman wall. The Romans later occupied the fort, facing the River Severn, to defend against invasions from South Wales (those pesky Silures again).
The Walk is Approx 6 miles. (Although we do have a Challenge to GPS and pedometer note takers Let's See what distance you come up with? )
An interesting walk with different aspects of varied history and landscapes to see. Please wear comfortable walking boots as the terrain is varied and can be steep and uneven footing in places.
The Bristol Hiking Group will also be joining us too. More the merrier.
We look forward to seeing you there
Cheers Katrina & Stuart
##### If anyone is getting the bus or needs help with transportation or directions the best website by far that I've found is :Transport info as it is a Route Planner. What you do is to type in your postcode or e.g Bristol then type in the final destination e.g Oldbury Court Estate. Then the Route Planner comes up with lots of options : #Then you select which numbered option suits you best? For example with buses it lists them in a numbered order but it's not necessarily the order that you prefer?
It's a about a 10 minute walk from the High street.
