Freshford to Iford - walk and picnic

The Freshford to Iford walk was well received in February when I ran it, and that was when it was soaking wet.

How about this time we try to do it in dry weather after a dry spell, and take a picnic along too for half way ?

Meeting at Freshford train station car park, I plan to walk to Iford Manor, then along footpaths and a (small) bit of single track road to Farleigh Hungerford castle. After that, following the footpath alongside the river back to Iford then back to Freshford.

Check http://runkeeper.com/user/622435608/route/2857428 for a rough map.

I guesstimate about 2 - 2.5 hours of walking and the total route is about 4.75 miles, although cutting off the Farleigh corner would save about 1 .5 miles.

The walk is dog-friendly, and the Inn at Freshford is well placed to have a quick drink at the end.

If you fancy coming, I don't do "organised" - all the walks I've been on have had grown-ups attending who are all aware of the need to stay dry and warm and keep a sense of humour in adversity.

Really fun to join in with this, thanks everyone, especially Dave for organising :-)

Well, the weather guessers seem to have changed their minds a little bit - light rain showers are now forecast for the time of the walk.

I'm still going to do it - but the picnic isn't really sensible, so I will be in the Inn at Freshford about 12 for a quick sandwich then at the station by 12:30 to meet you all.

I'll email my mobile number but phone signal there in the valley is poor.

For those of you training it to Freshford, the 12:07 from Bath arrives 12:16, and the Trowbridge service leaves 11:53, arriving at Freshford 12:05.

    Hi
Really sorry, but don't think I can make tomorrow now - am disappointed, but look forward to next one.
Hope you all have good time.

Well, the weather forecast has improved from being rainy/showery to overcast and warm.

Given the recent rain though, I'm not convinced that a picnic makes sense - lots of wet bums all round, I reckon, as dry patches would be difficult to find.

Instead, the Peto gardens at Iford Manor (http://www.ifordmanor.co.uk/garden.html) make an interesting diversion and there's a tea shop there which does decent cream teas, and The Inn at Freshford (http://www.theinnatfreshford.co.uk/) does food all afternoon except 4pm-5pm.

I've over-committed myself this weekend so unfortunately will have to withdraw

The current weather forecast for Saturday isn't very encouraging. I don't mind muddy but I do mind wet. I'll look at the weather closer to the day and make a call by early morning of the Saturday at the latest.

I would really love to come although I would need a lift to get there from North Bristol or can get to the centre if need be. I love castles so why cut off some of the walk, never been there. As long as someone can be organised to pick me up and Dave you know where you are going that's all that matters. If you are all lucky I could bake some muffins, just hope weather is kind to us??

There is a rail station at Freshford, if that helps.

And the second loop past the castle is optional but I plan to do it, as I have an emotional connection to the area.

I've just tweaked the Meetup to have an RSVP limit of 40 attendees - I don't have any idea how popular (or otherwise :)) this will be and huge groups tend to get unwieldy.

I'll review closer to the event.
