Would be cool to have one soon. What would be a good topic and/or who would be a good speaker?

flip side of viz prog? Visualizing Algorithms; June 26, 2014, Mike Bostock
    http://bost.ocks.org/mike/algorithms/
Algorithms are a fascinating use case for visualization. To visualize an algorithm, we don’t merely fit data to a chart; there is no primary dataset. Instead there are logical rules that describe behavior. This may be why algorithm visualizations are so unusual, as designers experiment with novel forms to better communicate. This is reason enough to study them.

But algorithms are also a reminder that visualization is more than a tool for finding patterns in data. Visualization leverages the human visual system to augment human intellect: we can use it to better understand these important abstract processes, and perhaps other things, too.

So glad this meeting is happening. Will be away Friday; look forward to participating next time. I'm now designing a VPL as part of my work. I've posted my VPL dissertation (and video) here: http://bit.ly/1ntjXI5

I'm not available to be the host for meeting due to the traveling I do for work, I'm just offering the meeting room at NextSpace in Santa Cruz to the group if you want the meeting to be held in Santa Cruz. The meeting room at NextSpace in SC holds up to 16 people and costs $37.50 an hour to hold a meeting with my membership, so attendees would need to pay a few dollars each. Let me know if you ever want to have a meeting in Santa Cruz, because I have to reserve the room ahead of time.

I'm a new member at NextSpace, an office sharing company located on (101) Cooper that connects Pacific Ave. with Front Street near the regal Theater in downtown Santa Cruz, The facility has a very nice meeting room available that I attend on Saturdays with the Web Development SW Meetup group. I have access to it but there may be small cost to each attendee (~$5) to use it if its not included for free in my membership. Let me know if you want me to check into tomorrow and for what dates and times - Len

Ya. Nextspace is great. Perhaps we could get enough people in the Santa Cruz area to warrant two "Starting the conversation" Meetups? What do you think?

I'm in Capitola CA so San Francisco at 6:30 pm on Friday evening exceeds my ability to attend.

We were looking for a space near Santa Cruz and central to the Bay Area but couldn't find one. Ami was nice and offered us a space in San Francisco. I am also hoping that there is enough interest in the group in Santa Cruz to have meetings here. We'll keep you posted.

Hello Visual Programmers! We are very excited to host the first event and to meet all of you interested in visual programming languages! Come meet others - both veterans and newbies - thinking about or working on various aspects of this domain. If for some reason the date is not good for a chunk of the group, we can try to find a more accommodating date. Hope to see you at Code & Canvas.
