Here's a co-meetup with the Beckwourth Doers meetup group ,on a very casual 1-1/2 mile snowshoe activity in the national forest behind the historic black-owned Winks Lodge in Gilpin County on Saturday, March 30th, 2013 at 9:00AM. The Winks Lodge in the Lincoln Hill Resort and Country Club was built by Wendell Winks back in the 1920's as a place for Black folks to get away from the summer heat of Denver. Wendell's Winks lodge was well known for $1.00 fried chicken dinners where the chickens were raised behind the lodge, killed and cooked fresh for each guest. During its golden days entertainers like Lena Horne would spend summer vacations on the property ground in her own cabin.
We'll leave from the Westminster Center RTD park & ride for Winks Lodge at 9:00AM. Expect ~1 hour drive to the lodge. The drive is on a very hilly, steep, winding mountain road. Not for the faint-hearted.
The snowshoe activity is considered easy to moderate with ~300 foot elevation gain, with some parts of the trail/road a bit steep. It will be a slow paced snow trek with lots of rest stops to make the day enjoyable for all.
