July 8th - One Note Wonders - A Monophonic Synth Petting Zoo

Playing on our past popular petting zoo theme, July will be the "One Note Wonder" - A Monophonic Synth Petting Zoo. I know I mentioned the possibility of a concert for July but the logistics are not lining up. The polyphonic petting zoo was super popular and fun I thought it would be fun to do a variant for this meetup. Note, while this is technically the 2nd anniversary of the meetup, we'll celebrate the 2nd anniversary with a BBQ/Jam in August.

What is a Petting Zoo?

No animals here. Just a funny name that has caught on in synth circles for an event where you can get some hands-on time with instruments.

If you don't have an monosynth, don't worry. Just come to the meetup and have fun enjoying the instruments that others bring.

Bring one Monosynth Plus...

• Stand or small portable table to put your instrument on so we can line the edges of the room with your synths without taking up tables and seating for meetup members. Think 5 minute setup.

• A set of headphones and an extension chord

• Be prepared to do a short 1-5 minute overview of your synth

• Let me know what synth you'll bring by answering the RSVP question or contact me through meetup.com.

Rapid-Fire Show & Tell
During the normal "presentation" part of the meetup, I'll be passing a cable (RCA or ¼”) to each person with a synth and connect you to the PA. You'll get up to 5 minutes to explain key standout features of your synth. Then after introductions members can try the synths on headphones.

Lineup

I'll update the lineup as people RSVP and tell me what synths they will bring. So far we have...

• Adam S. - Analogue Solutions Leipzig-s

• Gus - Arp 2600

• Mark P. - Korg Monotron

• Brendan - Korg MS20

• Mark M. - Novation Bass Station II

• Wes - Sequential Circuits Pro One

• Rick - Stylophone S2

Hopefully nobody will take offense at the photo captions. I was just going for the humor angle to show that we have a good time and we don't take ourselves too seriously!

Lots of fun and enjoyed see, learning about, and playing a wide array of mono synths.

This was a super fun meetup. Thanks to all who brought their Mono synths. Great night with fun presentations. Good friends. Good food and drink.

I'm getting really old. It was weird to realize that I have owned or used most of the historic synths that were shown tonight. :-) But it was great fun, as always, and the company was fantastic.

I'm new to this... is food available during the meet up? Happy stomach means more attentive ears.

Since the Slim Phatty has no keyboard, I'll be bringing the Alesis Keytar as a controller. Bring your flower pot hats.

That is, the Alesis Vortex Keytar.

I have to send my regrets this month - I'm out of town for work. I'll have to catch up in August!

Does anyone want to bring a mini brute?

I invited someone that might bring one. New member.

I'm planning on digging the EML out of the closet tonight and powering it up. Will bring it unless it doesn't work at all--might bring it even then. Should work though...

Updated list to include MeeBlip, Bass Station 2, and Prophecy. Great list.

What would people want to see most: Moog Sub Phatty or MeeBlip (http://meeblip.com/use-one/get-started-with-meeblip-se/).

    • Mike M.

      I agree. We're Moog-heavy already!

      June 25, 2014

    • Mark M.

      MeeBlip

For your list, Mark: Korg Prophecy!

Okay, I have made my decision. All this analog crap needs some properly digital counterbalancing, so I will bring one of the very few monophonic all-digital keyboard synths ever made... and will auction or sell it off at the end of the night!

If it arrives in time, I'll bring the Moog Werkstatt instead of the Stylophone S2.

Nice list thus far. If someone else has a Pro One and wants to bring it, I can something a bit more esoteric.

  • Mike M.

Whatever shall I bring? Decisions decisions... ;)
