A grade 3 walk, ogden waters, ovenden moors, wind farm (north section)

  • Aug 4, 2013 · 11:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

*** 01/07/2013 have upgraded this walk to level 3 after a convo with stuart, as there are some stiles to get over and some nice rough moorland to walk across, from what i have seen of our usual sunday bunch i dont think anyone of you would have a problem with it

Starting from the well-known beauty spot of Ogden Water, Set high in the Pennine hills lies Ogden Water. Ogden is a Country Park and Local Nature reserve set around a 34 acre reservoir that has been supplying the people of Halifax with a clean supply of drinking water for well over one hundred and fifty years. Ogden has a small car park, picnic areas, a visitor centre that is open at weekends. It has a small shop and serves 'vending machine' hot drinks and also ice-creams and confectionery. The shop sells pictures, photographs, and souvenirs, and of course public toilets.

The route: We follow a path along a wood and out into open moorland with spectacular views across Ovenden Moor to Ovenden Moor wind farm (please note dogs are welcome but have to be kept on leads at all time across the moors, at the wind farm and the walk back down to ogden). As you traverse the north end of the moor, passing the remains of quarries, strange stone-built structures and the Withens pub, once the highest inn in West Yorkshire (sadly no longer open), there are great views towards Oxenhope and Haworth (of Brontë sisters fame) in the Worth Valley.

we will stop at the 23 turbines of Ovenden Moor wind farm that have been supplying clean, green power for over 15 years now. Magnificently situated 440 metres above sea level on Hollin Hill, the turbines are set out in a V shape to make best use of the prevailing south-westerly wind. Built in 1993 at a cost of £10.6m, Ovenden Moor wind farm is one of the largest wind farms in the UK and produces 9.2 megawatts of electricity - enough to power 5,000 homes.

Classification: Easy

Distance: 5.9 miles (this does not include the walk round the reservoir, approx 1 mile or 2000 metres, if anyone want to walk round the reservoir at the end then i will be happy to do so, there are picnic areas for those that dont where ducks and geese will eat anything left in your back packs).

Typical duration: 3 hours

Height gain: 190m

Starting point: Ogden Water car park 11:00 am

The Causeway Foot Inn, 300 metres from the car park, serves quality traditional food and ales. It's also very dog-friendly.

By car
Ogden Water is just off the Halifax-to-Keighley road (A629), about four miles north of Halifax or two miles south of Denholme. Turn off the A629 at the Causeway Foot Inn, which marks the end of Ogden Lane (brown signs for Ogden Water). There is good parking (50p all day 8:00 am-8:00 pm).

By public transport
The 502 and 504 buses go from Halifax to Ogden Water. There are buses from Bradford to Denholme (696 and 697), where you can connect with the 502/504.

Shame about the "chav" speeding towards the group up on Withens Rd, - ha - and I nearly veered off track with Wendy towards the end; I was too busy nattering on- lol !!!! Time to check today's photos from resident photographer Simon . See you all in the near future. Nav

Oh dear, going to have to miss this one. To my horror I've just found out that my Lurcher is an avid sheep chaser after chasing around a field of sheep for an hour yesterday morning. Lots of sheep for him up on Ogden Moor and don't fancy getting shot at!!! Have a great day.
